As I was meandering through both of these prestigious forums, I came across the stark realization that many people who applied to Berkeley also applied to UChic (University of Chicago).

Now that decisions are all out:
1. Why would you choose one over the other?
2. Which was your top choice?
3. Where did you get in?

got into cal but still waiting for uchicago to arrive. so nervous!!!! parents are probably going to make me go to cal since i live in nor california... :(

I got into Cal, and also just got into U of Chi. I was so ready to be rejected to U of Chi, that I had pretty much had my eyes set on Cal... but now everythings changed.

I'm going to do the overnight thing at Chicago on the 10th and 11th. Im sure thatll help me a lot.

I got accepted to Cal and waitlisted at Chicago. I'm relieved even though Chicago was my first choice. I don't think our family could have afforded Chicago and I know they would have been really dissappointed if they couldn't send me to Chicago if I had gotten in.

The two campuses are totally different but now I'm really happy, and while I still want to look at UCSD and UCLA, Berkeley looks like where I'll go next year. :D

I'm pretty much stuck between Cal, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, and UChicago and I have no idea which school to choose; I can't even narrow it down to just 2. Chicago was my first choice but UC's are cheaper. I hate being indecisive.

I'm going to assume you are in California--
The UCs might be cheaper, but I feel like college is a brilliant opportunity to explore, dare to go beyond your borders and earn it all back later, because they're all fantastic schools. :]

Had my parents let me, (I live on the east coast and was strictly told I COULD NOT apply to schools in California) I would have given Berkeley a very serious consideration. Berkeley has a nice college atmosphere, a mixture of nerds and hippies and intellectuals. It is also has very strong academics, to the extent that those rankings of schools by major mean anything at all.

I still think I would have chosen Chicago had I been able to apply to Berkeley because I found the town a little bit uncomfortable. There are a lot of homeless people wandering about, and while I don't know how much they disturb college students it's still very upsetting to have to walk down the street and see tens of people camping out in People's Park. Also, I felt that Berkeley had a bit too much of a pot fixation...

I just recieved the financial aid from UChicago and it looks like I probably won't be going to UChicago since their financial aid package sucks. Between my twin sister and me, we would end up paying over 60K a YEAR just to attend Chicago

I've gotten in Berkeley as an out of stater-
and i need help deciding between berkeley and chicago!
aside from the size differences, what other things (academically maybe?) or otherwise are different between the schools?
ALso, what exactly is this 'core curriculum' at Chicago everyone keeps mentioning? Thanks

Well, Chicago's classes are much smaller (but that goes back to less people). Chicago also starts in the middle/late September (orientation is Sept. 15th ish?), and gets out in early June-- Berkeley is late August and May sometime. There are more asians at Berkeley.

I'm in state, and last night I declined acceptance to UC Berkeley, to make room for those appealing, if it can help at all. I would choose Chicago over Berkeley in a heartbeat, mostly because Berkeley is not where I would want to get an undergraduate education. It really depends on your priorities-- do you want sports prowess, huge (up to 800 student) intro classes, one year of dorming in triples meant to be singles, and a city swarming with students? Or Chicago, which is in my mind, ideal, but that is only for me. You have to weigh your own internal pros and cons.

thanks for the feedback guys. but im kinda worried abt the workload at chicago? i mean i'll probably have to fit in a part-time job as well...and im guessing the social scenes between the two are pretty different?

Well, they're both prestigious schools that probably demand lots on their undergrads. But don't worry! You're brilly, and you'll be able to handle it all. Chicago is a gorgy city, but I haven't seen Berkeley.
