I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with Film/Video Production at CalArts? In the program, have a student in it? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks :)

According to students that came from schools like Chapman and CalArts (and a few others $$$$$ schools) for Film and Video Production and/or animation to De Anza, ALL said they thought De Anza was better in nearly every way if are serious about pursuing it as a career over mere self-discovery or a hobby art. I suppose depends on how much hand holding one needs. Prime benefit of CalArts is that it is a 4 year institution as opposed to a 2 year even though internships at like Lucas and Pixar don’t start until junior year unless are SUPER talented.

kuma-chan!!!
where you been?
I thought you are goner.
why didn’t you come join in Dodge OC Chapman thing?

kmazza … I’ve read some of your posts and you seem to know your stuff, so thanks. Also, my S has already been accepted to LMU Film Production Fall 2011 and to SFSU Cinema Major. He’s also applied to CalArts, Chapman, USC and a few others that became moot now that he’s been accepted to LMU. Given those schools, where would you recommend and how about ranking them in order, based on what you know about them? Thanks.

soz typing from phone…lmu fo sure for industry…usc for academia…sfsu for documentaries…calarts then chapman. For price, location i.e. Wb, disney, networks etc., balance of business side i.e. Broadcasting and production im considering csun for more practicality. Teachers @ sfsu r cool but admin r *****es. If i had the money id go to lmu for sound recording/fx for film. Im older and trying to move up the ranks so am expected to know more management, legal, number crunching dollar sign stuff.

i dont care but gonna apply to usc n lmu 2 4 hell of it but if went that direction more would want and be interested in some decent scholarship or had the proper goverment work study programs which this country lacks. Both went up 2 30k a few years ago and now 40k a year! Thats all im willing to invest in myself 4 2 years or work there with working off a loan there.

Calarts is cool with creative film department but guess get over shadowed by the schools better known departments reputations.

There r all kinds of rules on transfers that id have to pay more cuz id have to go over a years worth of classes i already have taken or now taking and intro classes into a sequence at sfsu ucsd ucla csulb and kinda csuf sdsu 2. Ugh

I had the same question regarding Calarts film department. I applied because of its reputation but I know it’s more well known for its animation department.
I graduate this May with a B.A. in Multimedia . I applied to Cal Arts, USC, Columbia U, American Film Institute, and Loyola Marymount graduate film programs to focus on directing or cinematography.
However, I am having second thoughts about attending graduate film school. I will be mailing letters and resumes out within a month or so looking for a job at various television networks and film production companies.
I am thinking that may be the best route to take considering I am graduating with $20,000 in stafford loans to pay back. I suppose I can pay this off in a couple of years if I get a decent full time job.

At this point, the only way I would even consider graduate school is if my financial aid package consisted of just scholarships and assistantship/fellowship. I also applied for a scholarship from an outside source. I would even consider working full time while attending graduate then take out another stafford loan. I have professors who attended the USC and LMU MFA programs and did just that.

The less stressful route would be just apply to t.v., film, newspaper, and magazine companies now and just see what happens. crosses fingers
