Hello, I am a sophomore undergraduate student at MassArt. I am looking to transfer out to either CalArts or RISD for their photo program and was wondering which one would be the better choice. RISD has the great reputation and curriculum and I hear a lot of negative things and positive things about CalArts. If you could give me your opinion on both or give me some pros and cons for each that'd be great...Thanks!

The ‘best’ college is always a highly subjective and personal call.

Firstly, look at whether they’re an affordable option. Unless your parents can fund the lot, which will leave you with the least debt.

Secondly, consider why you want to transfer out of MassArt. Location? Academics? Does your new choice also have the same good points but with added extras?

Finally, do they create the kind of work that fits with you? Google student shows, online portfolios, recent alumni and staff. Forget about the trendy name. Which college is going to take your work to the next level?

Cali would make the most sense, because I want to focus my work on surf culture and because I’ve been on the east coast all of my life and I want to go out and capture a whole new lifestyle. I definitely feel like I belong in California, and I wouldn’t want to waste my time at RISD if that meant that I would be taking pictures of things I didn’t want to take pictures of. I probably answered my own question, but I also have to take into consideration which college has the best education.
