I've heard from some that Calc 2 is actually easier than Calc 1 in UMich. Is this true? It seems counter-intuitive, can anyone explain in what ways Calc 2 is easier?

Well..I dunno..but I"m gonna guess that the people who placed into Calc II are already pretty good at math, so they might find it easier simply because that's where their aptitude lies.

60 seconds.............................

I'm pretty sure the reasoning is that calc I is a weed-out class and is made purposely hard so that some will drop, whereas if you have made it to calc 2, it's somewhat understood that you are good enough to stay. Perhaps that is why calc 1 is perceived as harder.

What is the difference between these courses?

Why does MATH 295 not require any prior Calculus knowledge? Why is this a 200 level class? Is it because it is heavily theory/proof based, and mainly for people interested in concentrating in mathematics?

How can a Freshman take MATH 295 (Calculus III)?

I'm taking calc III (its Math 215 btw). And it does require calc 2 as a prerequisite (or ap bc calc credit)...and I'm not a math major.

I took Math 156 instead of Math 116 and I totally think it was better. The averages in 156 were really high, mostly A's and B's, whereas people would often fail 116 exams. 116 has annoying group hw that counts for nothing. In 156, hw is 30 percent of your grade. Even though the weekly homework sets are challenging, they are completely doable, you just need to work w/ other ppl and go to office hours to complete them. A freshman can take whatever classes they want as long a they have the enforced prereqs/consent/placement exam scores.

Calc II in terms of curriculum is easier that Calc I. In Calc I, you are being introduced to new concepts. In Calc II, you are simply building on those concepts. Calc III isn't also much harder.

295 is calc 1

I thought calc 1 was easier (no series)

Just take the highest level of math you can first year. Then you'll get the prerequisites out of the way quickly, especially for all of you stats and econ majors. That's my opinion. I'm starting at Calc 2. I wish I had taken BC instead to start in Calc 3. First I didn't want to take credit because I thought the college version would be better. But it turns out to be the same thing, so moving ahead is a good idea.

or if ur not a math related major just take the easiest one and ur done, ha! lol

The concepts in calcIII (math 215) aren't that hard if you grasped most of the concepts from hs calculus... but LAB IS A PAIN IN THE ***!!!

how hard is math 156?
