Calc 115

I have a question about course selection and admissions to the business school. I took Calc BC last year and I got a 5 on the AB part and a 4 on the BC part. Since the only Calc needed for the business school is Calc 115, should I just opt out of Calc and let my credits count for it? Also how hard is Calc 115? Do many/ most people get As? Thanks!

Based on those scores, you have sufficient calculus knowledge to opt out of it and still be fine for b-school (assuming you remember the material). Not many people get A's in math 115, but most of those students aren't of the caliber to get the scores you got on the AP test. Basically, Math 115 would be harder than your AP class, but based on your solid background evidenced by your scores, you would still be able to pull off an A fairly easily I think.

DONT DO CALCULUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS THE WORST CLASS AT UM! lol...not only in difficulty, but just in general...the GSI's are terrible, theres so much unnecessary work...yea and it seems ur smart enough so opt out dude!

Not everyone has bad experiences with calc here, don't let umar scare you. I know plenty of people who are enjoying math 115 and getting A's.

Chibears, if Knows is comfortable with the material that Calc BC covers, don't you think he can jump into math 215 and maybe take a couple of stats classes or a course in Game Theory instead of wasting his time with 115-116?

i had a 4 on BC calculus as well, but calc115 is pretty hard, not that its hard to get a B, its hard to get an A. AP classes are way easier than UM classes.

I WILL SCARE YOU MUHAHAHA!!.....hahaha im just playin with ya..yea its not totally bad, i just didnt like it

Right Alexandre. As I said, a 4/5 knowledge calculus is enough to know what you're doing for B-school, so I would personally opt out of it. If you decide you want to know calculus really well, you can go ahead and take 115/116, but I'd probably just go on to 215 (if you want more math) or just take higher-level econ.

Is it possible to get out of Calc 115 (for Ross preadmit) by taking Calc AB AP test? Would this just eliminate that requirement? Thanks

what about the international baccalaureate course? is a 6 or 7 in the IB MATH HL exam enough ?? ahh.. anything to stay away from calculus but even i wanna get into the B-School after freshman year..

Although I don't have the proof to back it up, my friend who is applying to B-school said they arent accepting his AP Calc AB credit for 115, I guess only BC does the trick. Again, I have not researched to see if this is the case.

I assume you can't take the placement exam and satisfy the Calc 115 if you score high enough. I took "dual credit" calculus. We used a college text book and received college credit that my state's school will accept, but Michigan will not (since I was competing against high school kids).

According the 2005-3006 AP guidelines, http://www.admissions.umich.edu/academics/apguidelines.html , a 4/5 in Calc AB gets you out of 115, and a 4/5 in Calc BC gets you out of 115 and 116. Keep in mind that because of how the computer system works, you'll have credit listed for math 120/121 instead of 115/116. Those are just dummy classes that were made to deal with AP calculus credit.

No anhydrosis, the placement test is just to see how good you are at pre-calc. It can suggest preparedness for calculus, but nothing beyond.

Do NOT take Math 115 or 116. Like it was said earlier on this, either take a higher-level econ class or do Math 214, 215, 216, or 217 which have calc 2 as a prereq.

Math 115/116 are classes that are designed to make it very difficult to get an A of any kind, and so many people make the mistake of thinking that if they did well on the AP then if they "retake" the class that they'll easily get an A -- do not do that.

The decision is ultimately up to you, but I'd say it definitely looks better to do something a little bit harder because you can (Calc 3, Diff. Equations, etc.) than to retake something you already did in high school (Calc 1, Calc 2).

Hmm, unfortunately placing out of 115/116 is not an option for me since my school didn't offer Calc BC.
I'm getting an A- in my Calc AB class but I'm having problems with the practice ap exams which is kinda odd.. Is it a better idea to take 115 to make sure I really understand the stuff? or just go into 116?

depends how much you want to know calculus and how much you care about your GPA.

I'm in the exact same situation as the poster two above. So, I have the same question.

Chibers- I care about my gpa A LOT more than I care about calc. Calc is basically one of those classes I'll take because I have to.

Soniqwave, I recommend you go into Calc 2 - however, I've heard that Math 156 (Honors Calc 2) is easier than Math 116, which is infamous for having one of the most-failed exams at the university.

estrella, if you're worried about your GPA, just wait til your AP scores come in and use them to get out of as much math as you can I guess.
MatthewM04-I'm not so sure about that. First remember that Math 156 is Applied Honors Calc II so it'll be very science/engineering driven, and for people considering b-school, that's probably not a great idea. Also, I heard from numerous honors students that 156 was in fact pretty hard. "pretty hard" for honors approximately = "really hard" for non-honors students. The classes are probably similar in difficulty, with slightly less risk of a C or really low grade in honors.
