Calc 155a/b question

Hey guys, I'm trying to get an idea of what classes to take next yr, as I have to pick on June 12th, and I was looking for some advice. I definitely think I'm going to take List and Rosenthal for chem 102a/b and I've decided on calc 155a/b, but as far as professors go for calc, I haven't been able to find any other advice. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm on a premedical path, so protecting my GPA is a must, but I'm a good students and I've never had a problem with math or science before.

Also, as long as I'm looking for some advice and asking questions, is it required to take the freshman writing seminar class my first yr? Also, what other classes would you suggest taking your first semester fresh yr? I want to get acclimated, so I don't want anything too overwhelming, but I don't want to waste time either. I'm majoring in Nueroscience, but I can't really start those classes until Soph yr. Any suggestions? Any requirements I'm overlooking? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

I can tell you who not to have: Raven. He's a perfectly good teacher, but he doesn't seem to want to be there at all. Also, his in-class examples and notes are greatly organized, but only have the most basic examples...while his tests are a lot harder. I'm engineering though, so I can't help too much on the writing seminar thing.

go to ratemyprofessors.com

Definitely agree with the Raven comment. I had Schecter for 155B. He's kind of strange and goes off on really stupid tangents, but his class wasn't that hard. He does make you turn in homework though. I basically sat in class everyday and did the sudoku and got an A. I also know a few people who did take an neuro intro class freshman year, so I'd look into that if you're interested. And as far as seminars, you are required to take one. Good luck getting one you want!!

Thanks a lot, silversparkles, I guess I'm just going to directly pm you from now on, b/c you've been so helpful. Thanks again!

Hate to double post, but this is really one for everyone. Has anyone had Phillips for Chem 102a? I've read on ratemyprofessors.com under A. List that a lot of them recommended Phillips over him on the comments. Any back up for this before I decide?

Who should I take for Calc 150a/b?

VandyHopeful,
If you're premed, the typical first year goes like this:
CHEM 102/104/106 a and b
BSCI 110/111 a and b
CALC 150ab or 155ab or 170ab or 175
Writing Seminar
and fill in the gaps with other classes you want to take or for your major if you're not a bio or chem major

As for who to take for Gen Chem, I haven't really heard great things about any of them. Hanusa and Rosenthal(2nd semester) seemed pretty good. After him, I would put it at Phillips, then List, then Polavarapu, then Wright.

Pasch,
Nearly all (if not all) Calc 150 classes are taught by grad students. Chances are one of them will be from Ukraine, too!

Haha, thanks slipstream. Glad I'm taking 155 then. So that kind of schedule with chem, bio, and calc all in the first semester is common? Well I guess if everyone else can do it, I can too. I'm not sure how to fill the gaps yet. Well I think I might go with Phillips for chem 102a and Rosethal for b. Thanks again.

the fall 2007 classes are out...

anyways, for calc 155 they dont tell you which teacher is teaching which section.... so how are we supposed to know which one to sign up for?

you don't. for those that say staff, you have to find out the day of. very risky if you ask me.
For chem, I highly recommend list. ( I had him). Teachers don't really matter since the tests are all the same for all four teachers. Prasad posts notes online- you can access them no matter what teacher you take. Those are helpful.

if a teacher teaches better, wouldn't that make a difference? plus, 20% of the test is teacher-specific.

pretty sure i got a 5 on calc bc. maybe a 4 w/ a 5 ab pullout. this is helpful. thanks guys.

I disagree - I had Hanusa, and we didn't have lecture notes from other sections posted.

would you say philips teaches well, slipstream? Better than List who you had for orgo lab? lol

I stand corrected. But it's only 20% of the test.

LittleLostFlute- It was my experience that polaporapu posted notes first semester when I took it. It might not be the same every year. sorry for the confusion.

ecnerwalc3321 - No problem, just clarifying. I had Hanusa first semester, and he didn't post Polaporapu's notes on Blackboard. Polaporapu probably provided the other professors with them, but only some posted them.
