I'm a sophomore in high school taking pre-cal. I'm deciding whether to take Calc AB or BC next year. Next year I'm planning on taking AP Physics C: Mechanics, so I'm leaning towards the easier course, AB, to lighten my load a bit next year. My school doesn't have a multivariable Calc course, so if I take BC next year the only thing I could take senior year is Statistics. But the thing is, I don't want to learn basically the same things two years in a row. The Calc BC teacher told me that BC covers almost twice as much as AB, so only the first semester of BC would be learning stuff I've already learned in AB, and I don't mind that, but I've actually heard in other places that BC barely covers more stuff than AB, so I don't know. I'd also like to know if taking AB and then BC would hurt my chances of getting into a great college (i.e. Stanford or Berkeley). Do you think it would? Thanks for your help.

easy, take AB your junior year and make room for BC and Stats senior year. BC will obviously be much easier, which will allow you to take another AP and boost your gpa, while still taking all the hard classes.

i suggest taking a language online or over the summer so you can just get it out of the way

Real hustlas take BC w/o AB

I was concerned about my DD taking AP BC along with/Physics. However, the top students in her school made it a point to be in those 2 classes JR. year. Your call-

^^ Your “DD” (seriously parents, acronyms aren’t cool) wasn’t a junior. Best option is to take AB now and BC in senior year. It saves annoying commute to take the next level of Calculus from a college, and it does not look slacker. Plus, you’ll be able to do better in Physics C.

hobbithill: Should I take physics C junior or senior year?

It’s imperative you have a good grasp over basic calculus before doing physics C

Hi Hobbithill-
I can appreciate your preference for not using abbreviations. However…to clarify…my daughter WAS a Junior when she took Cal BC and Physics…earned A’s in those classes, and 5’s on her AP exams.
My daughter’s abilities may not have been the same as the OP, but it certainly is a viable option if her grades/scores are an indication…and if you live near Cal…you have heard of her high school (Skyline).
