Calc AB or BC?

I will be a senior next year, and had the option to either take Calc BC or Calc AB. I wanted to take BC, but my teacher said that he wasn't sure if I could pass the exam. However, this was only about one month into Junior year, and I had been struggling a bit (That means B+'s and A-'s, instead of A's.) He also said I asked a lot of questions that BC takes advantage of the answers. (That is why I ask them now, but whatever.) So, I signed up for AB, and proceeded to prove my teacher wrong the entire year. I got a 101% first quarter, 95% second quarter, 97% third quarter, and 100% fourth quarter.

My question is, should I ask to be switched into BC instead? I am already taking 4 other AP classes, but I'm sure I can handle it, that isn't a problem. How much harder is BC than AB? I am honestly worried I will be bored in AB.

If you have any other questions for me so you can give me a better answer, let me know. This has been bothering me all year.

I think you should take BC, if you think you will be able to. I took AB this last year as a junior and found it to be pretty easy as well ( got A’s both semesters). Additionally, I noticed that my friends in the BC class were generally learning the same topic with the exception of a couple topics near the end of the year (Parametrics, etc.)
So overall, I would suggest you just take BC b/c it is generally learning the same thing with the addition of 2-3 topics, and at a slightly faster pace. The only reason why I personally didn’t choose to take BC as a junior is b/c my school only goes up to BC, so I would have had to go to another high school to take Calc 3 Honors.

Some things to consider:

 • What is the reputation of AB and BC calc at your high school? At my daughter’s high school the BC calc teacher had a very good reputation and the average AP score of her students was something like 4.6.
 • If you know what schools you will be applying to in the fall, check out their websites to see how the AB and BC Calc AP scores will transfer to classes. At my daughter’s university, a 3 in BC Calc gives the same credit as a 4 or 5 in AB Calc.
 • How concerned are you about your senior year GPA? Would a B in BC Calc vs an A in AB Calc hurt?

In general, I suggest going with the harder class first. If you find out quickly that it is too fast-paced, you can probably switch to the easier class.

I am hesitant about the BC teacher, who is the same one who didn’t think I could do well on the test. He and I have a complicated relationship. But I still got an A.

Le bumpity bump.

If you are hesitant about the BC teacher then I would say stay with AB.

I don’t know how you are pulling of 90+ in calculus AB, unless you teacher gives some INSANE extra credit. The highest grade in my class was an 87. And this kid was supreme genius in math. But yeah, go for BC.

Dragooner, all schools are different. Hate to say it but either your school is extremely hard or your class is dumb.

OP definitely go for bc. Doesn’t add that much and there’s a reason bc gives an ap subscore - because there very similar classes. Don’t let teachers push you around - I wouldn’t be taking or have taken my classes if I did.
