Son is taking Calc AB class and is/has self-studied for the BC portion. His college will give him same credit for 4/5 on AB or 3 on BC. More for 4/5 on BC. I know you also get a AB subscore on a BC exam.

So question is, does anyone know if one's score on the AB exam correlates pretty well with the AB subscore on the BC exam? In other words, is he going to lose anything by taking the BC if he does not do well on the BC portion of the test but does OK on the AB portion?

It sounds like this college does not look at the AB subscore. However, if he does know the AB stuff really well, chances are he’ll make at least a 3. The test is something like 60% AB stuff (or some other high percentage). So no, he won’t be losing anything. It would be really hard to make an outstanding AB subscore but a terrible (i.e. 1 or 2) total BC score.

He won’t lose anything. The correlation between BC score and AB subscore is pretty strong, given that a large percent of the BC exam is AB material. Granted, it’s possible to get an AB subscore of 5 and a BC score of 2 or 3, if the kid doesn’t know any BC material but knows the AB stuff cold. It’s also possible, however, to get a BC 5 and a AB subscore of 4.

As long as he can get a 4 on AB subscore or a 3 on BC, he’s pretty good for starters. He’s the only kid out of class of 450 in his HS who is even trying the BC. Pretty sad.
