Calc AB vs BC...?

Hey guys, i was just wondering if you can give me some advice whether to take Calc AB or BC. I'm currently a sophomore, and we make our junior schedule tomorrow.

In my school, you NEED to take AB if you want to take BC, which is kind of weird because BC is like 80% AB.

I am really confident at math (I qualified for the AIME 3 years in a row, MMPC(Michigan Math Prize Competition) top 100 2 years in a row) so i was thinking about talking to the AP coordinator at our school and ask her if i could skip AB and take BC right away. And according to some juniors and seniors i know, that is possible. I also got an A+ in precalc in first semester.

BUT i also heard from some of my junior and senior friends that they took AB for school and took the BC test. That doesn't seem a bad choice either, also because our school's BC teacher is really strict when grading stuff and there's only 4 people who get an A(not an A-) in a class.

So I wanted to ask you if i should take AB at school and take the BC test, or just take BC at school and take the BC test. As i told you before, i'm really confident at math...and i think if i try hard i'll get an A in BC.

My junior schdule is:
English 11 / Spanish 3 / IB World SL / AP Phyisics C Mech / AP Psycology / AP AB or BC
Self study: AP human geography / AP Macroeconomics
As you can see, my junior schedule is kinda rough. That's why i was considering whether to take AB or BC.

Thank you in advance!

Come on guys, 251 views and no comments? I just need your opinion, nothing special or anything…

Bottom line: If the norm at your school for people applying to the type of colleges you want to go to is AB in 11th, I would just do that, get an A and a 5, and not self-study BC. What math class would you take as a senior if you took BC now? Or if you self-studied it? If there isn’t a higher math class available, it probably isn’t worth it to finish the curriculum a year early.

If there is another math class for senior year, I feel like you know the pros and cons, and only you know what you can handle. Obviously, the best scenario would be for you to take BC, get an A, and pass the exam. But if you don’t think you can pull the grade and you’re happier self-studying, I think it would be better to do well in the AB class and pass the BC exam. Both self-studying and the harder class would add extra stress to a tough schedule, so it also just depends on your learning style.

i’ll be taking AP Stats in my Senior year. And thanks for the help!

Self-study for BC, and don’t take math senior year if there isn’t any other option.

IMO, it’s ridiculous for schools to make AB a prerequisite for BC.

If you plan on majoring in science math or engineering, then taking Calc BC next year and multivariable calc senior year would be best
