In my school, for what I've seen (I dunno cause I am not in IB), you just take the course and then when you "test out" you decide whether you go for SL or HL. I don't think the courses are labeled themselves.

But they have an IB Calculus and this one is IB Advanced Calculus. So I don't know....

HL is much harder then BC calc and covers most of the material anyway. And assuming that you took calc AB last year (that's how it is at our school), you will have trouble self studying the one chapter that IB HL does not cover.

Edit: I see the course is new for your school; your teacher is in for loads of fun.

I'm in IB Math HL, and according to my teacher, HL Math's core + the Series & Differential Equations option (which is what we are doing, and what most IB schools in this area do) covers most, if not all, of the material in AP Calc BC and more. HL Math has lots of other stuff like statistics (quite a bit of it), 3-D vectors and some proof-writing, which (in my clearly biased opinion) gives a better survey of Math than AP Calc BC does, because it covers more aspects without sacrificing depth too much. This also means that the class is very tough - but very rewarding if you like Math and want to learn a lot (:
