Hi, I'm a high school senior, and was wondering which class I should take if I'm looking into majoring in business...

I've already taken Calc AB, but didn't do so great on it. I passed the class with a B, but didn't pass the AP test.

So the two things I'm considering is how beneficial AP Stats is to my major, versus having to take Calculus in college (since I'm not majoring in math or engineering I'm only worried about having to take it as a "required course").

Plus, I'm not a hotshot at calc, so....opinions? Please?

Calculus BC is a lot more valuable. I don’t believe most universities even give corresponding credit for Statistics but many universities give credit for Calculus and many colleges have some minimum math requirement for their students. Calculus often fulfills them.

Your main concern right now is admissions. What class will make you a stronger candidate. In a vacuum would AP Stats possibly be more beneficial to your major, perhaps. Will Calc BC be a stronger option than AP stats on your application, yes… IF you can do the work.

I will refer to another poster, I apologize that I can’t give credit as I don’t remember who it was (short memory) advised a student to think about why they had done poorly, or why they had struggled the previous year. Was the work truly too difficult? Did you simply get a teacher that was a really tough grader? Were your study habits lacking? This is something you need to evaluate, being very honest with yourself. Ask your GC what you can expect this year. Perhaps ask your previous Calc teacher. You did earn a B. Getting a low mark on the AP test could mean you don’t test well, had a lousy day, didn’t study for the test, were taught Calc AB, but not taught ‘to the AP test’. There are many reasons. Evaluate these things and you will have a clearer picture.

9 times out of 10, you should go with BC. It looks much stronger on your application vs. Stats. Yes, Stats is easier. But wouldn’t adcoms know this? And if they do, what would they think of you if you took Stats over BC?

Although, I must say, there seems to be more of a correlation between business and statistics than business and calculus. D:

Well, I know myself by now, and I know I’m not a good studier. My grades are good, but I’m relying on my participation in leadership programs and school clubs/ASB to push me through.

But is taking Stats really that much of a downer? I feel more interested in the subject than Calc BC (knowing that it’s easier helps a lot too), but I’m willing to struggle through Calc BC if it increases my chances of getting admitted.

And my counselor has no idea of how much taking Calc BC would help me, or even how much I need for majoring in business…so I’m pretty lost on the subject as well.

The first half year of BC is all Calculus AB material, so you should already be familiar with the material.
Stat is really a joke class…(well at my school). I have heard that the AP Stat exam is perhaps one of the easiest AP exams.
You should go with BC, because you are already familiar with the sbuject matter and it does reflect better on you.

AP statistics is a joke. The test relies heavily on calculator use and you basically learn nothing. Take calculus if you are only taking one of the two.
