In high school, i would love to be able to learn multi-variable calc, but i will soon be a junior taking brief calc. What 2 calc classes could i enroll in a single year to get ahead?
Does your high school offer multivariable calculus, or would you be taking it at a local college?
It does and also linear algebra
But never mind linear algebra
Why are you taking brief calculus as a high school junior? If you are ready for calculus (i.e. completed precalculus and trigonometry), why not take a regular calculus course (AP calculus BC or college calculus 1 and 2)?
I’ve only done algebra II as a sophomore so my tracking tells me I can’t skip brief calc
Is it maybe precalculus instead of brief calculus? I’ve never heard of “brief calculus”.
In my school, those 2 are different classes but i could take either one to be able to advance to calc bc. Which ever one I choose wouldn’t make a difference.
I had never heard of it either, but if you look up “brief calculus” you will see that it’s a thing.
If you can choose between pre-calculus and brief calculus, it’s probably better to choose pre-calculus because it will cover more of the material on this list that you should know before taking calculus.
You could ask your guidance counselor to let you skip to AP Calculus BC, or to take pre-calculus and AP Calculus BC at the same time. This is probably feasible if your Algebra II class was strong and you have already have some knowledge of trigonometry and exponential/logarithmic functions.
It’s perfectly fine to take AP Calculus BC in your senior year and not take multivariable calculus until college, though. Since linear algebra doesn’t require calculus, you might be able to take AP Calculus BC and linear algebra at the same time in your senior year.
