Calc I

Just looking for some info on the course from past students.
How difficult is the course in general? Would it be somewhat easy to get an A if I've already had AP Calc in high school?
Are TI-89's allowed in the class? Is the curve usually difficult?

thanks

I don’t exactly fit your profile but I do have a friend who took Calc I after he took AB in high school and got a 4 on the test. He said it was a lot harder than the high school version, and that he had to work pretty hard to get an A in the class.

Not exactly the same set of circumstances, but my son took AB in high school and got a 5 on the AP exam. He had orientation this week and was advised to start with Calc 2 (math 116).

Michigan math is very hard. Prior background in Calculus is helpful unless you placed out. Calc II is even harder than Calc I. One of the most failed classes at Michigan. Only 10% of the class is allowed to get A’s if I remember correctly. There is a curve and it’s sometimes generous depending on how low the averages are.

This is the class I am most nervous about. He is trusting that his advisor made a good recommendation based on math grades in HS, GPA, ACT, SAT math II, AP score, and the UM math placement exam. I just wish everyone would stop saying how hard it is and how many fail this course!! ;)

My friend who finished Calc 1 with an A, received C- in Calc 2 last semester.

Yes, you can use Ti-89’s. No, it won’t be easy just because you took it in highschool unless you’re very good at math because only 10% or so can get an A. They tend to take a lot of points off for questions, even if you make a tiny mistake.

Um, thanks, raezin. Anyone have anything encouraging to say about Calc 2??? Any hope whatsoever?

yeah; transfer in the credit :p

I did better in calc 2 than calc 1, while putting in less work…no idea how

Which kinda blows for me because I had AP calc credit but decided not to use it
