Calc Placement Test

Is there a calc placement test for people attending the College?

Thanks.

There is no placement test, but rather a placement system.

If you are going into Business, Biology, or Social Sciences, then take MATH 121 & 122. If you are going into Math, Pre-Med, Natural Sciences, and expecting to go to Grad School for the Social Sciences, then take MATH 131, 132, & 231. MATH 121 & 122 are not suitable prerequisites for MATH 231, but MATH 131 can replace 121 just not the other way around.

Ok, thanks. Do you know which math classes you place out of if you get a 4 or 5 in the AP?

It's okay, I got it

Math (AB)
4 or 5, 4 credits earned for MATH 131
Math (BC)
4 or 5 AB subscore, 4 credits earned for MATH 131
4 or 5, 8 credits earned for MATH 131 and 132

I want to go into Business and I was thinking of taking 131 since it appears to be more challenging but is it worth it all? Should I just stick with 121 and make sure I get a good grade?

Good question, I'm in the same situation.

I say go for 131 to see if you can handle it. The professor would likely give a quiz to see how proficient you are with calculus some time in the first week. If you get lower than C- on that first quiz, seriously consider going to 121. As I said, if you don't want to continue onto 132, you can go to 122 since 131 counts as a prerequisite for 122.

wat are the names of the courses other than math 121, or math 131?
is it like linear algebra, or calculus I, or multi-vars...?

MATH 121 = Applied Calculus I
MATH 122 = Applied Calculus II
MATH 131 = Calculus I
MATH 132 = Calculus II
MATH 231 = Calculus III

The COD is your friend.

if u want to go to the comm school don't take 131/132. just take 121/122. 131/132 are unnecessarily difficult for people who are trying to go into the comm school--where all you need to do to basically guarrentee you getting in there is a 3.5 gpa.

i think APMA is harder than MATH (in college)

isn't apma the math courses offered in the e-school?

Yeah APMA is for us E-Schoolers and a bit more difficult. Ahh, APMA 109, 111, 212, 213, and 310. Best and worst times of my two years so far. MATH 121 = APMA 109 which is a class that is not required for the E-School for we are assumed to have those skills already.

Malex, might I say that hyou have been on fire lately. Every freaking question that comes up you answer! Take a break for a while, lol

No, don't! Haha, you've been great Malex. Thanks for helping out with all my (our) queries.

Someone has to answer these questions. I just happen to be at the right place at right time.

How do 131 and 121 differ? I took Calc I this year and we had to apply the skills learned...so isn't that "applied math" then? I just want to know out of curiosity. I'm taking Calc II this summer.

"Applied Calculus" (MATH 121 & 122) is calculus needed for business and the like so it is centered more on differentiation, curve fitting, relative/absolute extrema, and other stuff that would be necessary for those majors. "Calculus" (MATH 131, 132, and 231) is every topic in Calculus from what is learned in the 120's and topics like Series, multiple techniques of integration, and multivariate problems.

To put things into perspective, you will learn all of 121 and 122's topics halfway through 132.

sigma,

131 and 132 are simply harder than 121 and 122. remember in high school how in math text books there are A questions (easy) B questions (medium) and C questions (really hard)? well most of the questions in 121 and 122 are A and early B, while most in 131 and 132 are later B, C questions.

also, the focus of students in the classes are different. i took 132 my first year--and i'm a history major. i was in the class with a bunch of chemistry physics and other science majors. i would venture to say those kids were better at math than i was.

I am entering apma 111 but the website says some kids take 109?
