With Summer Registration for the Fall term fast approaching, I've been looking over the available Calc Courses for Engineering Students, and their listed instructors. The problem is that very few have an instructor listed. Now, I'm sure the vast majority of teachers are fine, but if there are any that should be avoided, if possible, I'd like to know. Also, if you've had a good experience with a prof, and could chime in with that, I'd appreciate it. I realize that it's early, and a printed timetable in much more detail will likely be out in August, but since summer registration starts in June, it's a little like shooting craps as far as the teacher lottery goes.

I would like to know this as well!

just be sure to look at RateMyProfessor(s).com This has helped me choose sections of classes up to now.

by the time you register in the summer the professors names should be up, but you won’t know who teaches the discussion sections until next fall, besides they’ll be taught by grad students anyway

if you’re going to start out in calc 2 (or at least the engineering sections of calc 2–the summer guides should let you know which sections those are), i highly recommend professor ando. the other eng section was taught by professor laugesen who seemed like a good teacher, but ando was great. very enthusiastic and helpful, and he really cared about the students.

if you’re going into calc 3, i really don’t know who to recommend. i had tumanov and he was okay, but a lot of people seem to like carty. tumanov’s lectures were pretty boring, but i’ve heard that carty is a lot tougher.

I wouldn’t go purely off of ratemyprofessor. You have to realize that most the people who post there probably did bad in the class to be mad enough to write the reviews they do.

Eh, FWIW, if I had a great professor, I usually wrote something good about him/her.

Still, even if only the bad professors got a lot of reviews, you could tell who is generally bad based on how many negative reviews they got. It is still a somewhat useful site.
