because we want to get it sooooo badly. :P

what does a harvard student have in common with a boston university student?

Both got into BU =P

Would someone please explain to me how it reduces stress to have one’s chances estimated by uninformed strangers on a message board? Would going to a palm reader also reduce your stress?

Loved it–
very funny!

I think the fact that you get responses, regardless of whether they’re accurate or not, somewhat soothes your nervousness. And also, EVERYONE says HYPSM is a “reach” (nearly 100% of the time) so it’s not like you’re actually going to get an accurate (or inaccurate) response.

Yes, I imagine it would :P

I’ve seen people who obviously don’t know what they’re talking about telling students that they’ve got good chances for Harvard. I don’t see how raising false hopes like that helps.

Better to hear that Harvard is a reach for everyone, and then to pin one’s hopes on a match school or safety. If Harvard comes through, one always can change one’s mind and accept admission. Easier to do that than to count on an acceptance and have one’s heart broken. Seems to me to be a lot less stressful, too.

I have posted chances threads, but I take everything I read with a grain of salt. I deem them more like social experiments to see what people would say to certain things. I am passionate about the human mind.
And BTW, I DO pursue things because I love them, not because they will benefit my resume. I just like a lot of things. Too many, in fact. I just like learning for the sake of learning, and I hope I don’t come off as one of THOSE people who is just trying to impress.

This is funny…but at the same time I know MANY people who adapted themselves to a Harvard mold and got in…

futurephysician: i totally agree. i take all sorts of college classes for fun; i love them. however, since they are not ‘focused to show my passion’, the colleges might think that i am only taking classes to resume pad, which is not true!

i’ve taken psych, philosophy, astronomy, and creative writing classes at colleges…but as you can see, these activities don’t show “passion” -.-

HAHA that post was funny Northstarmom !! Okay my opinion ( its probably going to be a rant but I’ll keep it short;): I’m one of those people who started a chance thread once I joined CC because every thread I saw was an obnoxious “chance me!!!”. I look back and feel so utterly stupid for wasting other people’s time for responding to my chance thread. I don’t even know what I was expecting, but like others have said, at the time I thought it would give me a confidence boost (I had NO idea that CC had such high standards!!)

Most responded to my thread with you have 0% chance or same as everyone else. It was actually good because now I don’t expect ANYTHING!! A lot of times everyone around you says you will automatically get in. Reading the replies from others I wasn’t so devastated when I was rejected yale because like others said I had no chance!!

Now I just want to DELETE every chance thread/ read my essay/I’m a freshman HELP/ What do I need to do/ thread!!! So annoying!! I just reply “you have the same chance as every one of the other 30,000 applicants” without even reading the thread.

^ i couldnt agree more XO

i also hate people who disguise their thread… they would name it something random, and the body of their post ends up being one of those annoying “chance me”

Hopefully since u attended Harvard they started instructing manners bro

rofl northstarmom, aren’t you so bright and cheerful? ^.^

good to know

Ugh.

So, northstarmom…being the seasoned member of CC that you are…and with all of the great wisdom and knowledge that you feel so free to impart…well, I’ll just stop here. I don’t want to turn into one of those self-important, obnoxious CC-ers who enjoy putting others down for asking questions.

thank you so much for the information OP! before, i thought i’d have maybe 1 in 100 chance of getting into harvard, but now i know for sure its exactly 1 in 1,000,000. weird **** happens all the time, so i’ll keep crossing my fingers on this one.

This thread needs a bump.

Why does it need a bump, there is nothing worth reading here

this thread should be deleted.
