Hello everyone! I'm trying to calculate my GPA as far as UC Berkeley and Stanford are concerned. I'm assuming that they don't count freshman year (six B's out of sixteen total grades) or the non-prep summer school course before sophomore year. I'll list sophomore and junior courses below without specifics (for the sake of anonymity). My school is on a 4/4 block schedule:

Grade 10:

Honors English 2: A-/A
H. Chemistry: B+/A
H. World History: A-/A
Yearbook: A/A

Algebra 2: A+/A+
PE: A/A (not UC prep)
AP Course: A-/A
Regular Language Course, Second Year: A/A+

H. English 3: A/A+
H. US History: A/A
AP Course: A/A
Yearbook (not UC prep during second term): A/A

So of the classes above, I took the ones that are prep and counted 5 points for a weighted A, 4 for an unweighted, and 4 for the weighted B+. I then divided this number by the total number of grades: 127/28 = 4.536 rounded. This seems wrong; my "weighted GPA" (including freshman year) is significantly lower. Am I including too many honors courses or adding too many points for each one? I get the sense that grade inflation has something to do with it.

Sorry about the length. Thanks for any replies!

UC will only give an extra weighted point for 8 semesters of qualified coursework. The APs get the bump; you’ll want to check with your counseling office to make sure that the others honors coursework actually qualifies for UC honors weighting. Yearbook does not fall under UC’s a-g coursework guidelines, so you shouldn’t be counting those grades.

On my transcript, the first term (first half of year) yearbook course is labeled “UC prep”. Is this not the same as A-G requirements, or is it a mistake by the counseling office? It’s true that it doesn’t seem to fall under College-Preparatory Electives…unless it counts as a visual art.

RandomPhilosophy, here’s what the UC website says about courses that can be counted as visual & performing arts:

And here’s the specifics for what Visual Arts courses can be approved for the (g) requirement:

Doesn’t sound like yearbook fits in there, either. That “UC prep” designation does seem odd. What it’s labelled shouldn’t make any difference, because UC will count it or not when they recompute your GPA. But you’ll want to be sure that you do have your visual or performing art credit from some other course.

I see…I should talk to the counseling office when school starts and point out that problem. So my GPA would probably be lower than that 4.53 I cited?

In response to spiralcloud: I’m certain that class rank is one of the most important academic factors for Stanford, and I don’t see how they could exclude freshman year as far as that goes. They would have to possess the transcripts of other members of the class so that they could compare students and recalculate rank.

Edit: Those honors courses are listed as “weighted points”. I think this would mean 5 for an A, 4 for a B, just as it is for AP courses? When I’ve had two honors, one AP, and one regular class at once (and earned A’s in each) my weighted GPA is listed as 4.75.
