my school doesn't gibe students the 4.0scale GPA

I heard UNC give 6.0 for AP, 5 for H, and 4 for regular.

My school has 4 divided classes starting from

college prep --> accelerated --> Honors --> AP

In this case would both CP and ACC considered regular?

Additionally, are A+ and A- considered in UNC scale?

When UNC reports average incoming GPA on the common data set they use the scale used by NC public high schools. There is no “UNC scale.”

That being said NC public schools grade on this scale: 93-100= A, 85-92=B, 77-84=C, 70-76=D, <70=F.

NC has an augmented and a standard scale, the different counties are at their discretion on which one to use, so to get a rough idea of where your GPA stands in comparison to everyone else, use 93+=6.0/5.0/4.0, and don’t worry about +/-.

Note that you should not report your self-calculated NCWise GPA on the application. They will see the GPA your school gives, and your class rank, but more importantly they will see your individual classes, and make the determination to admit based on the rigor and the grades here.

Calculating your GPA on this scale will give you an idea of where you stand in comparison to everyone else. The average incoming GPA at UNC is 4.47 (if you are in-state, you can get in with less, if you are OOS, aim to have 4.6+)

Also, in all honesty, GPA is only as important as it affects class rank, which is much more important. They will see your individual grades, of which GPA is just a nice compressed version.

what if the school does not send the number grades but the letter grades?
then would all A+ ~A- considered just as A?

Yeah, I was just giving numbers as a reference in case your school sent numbers instead of letters.

To get a rough idea of what your GPA is on the scale used in NC public high schools ignore +/-. This will give you what your GPA would have been in Wake or Mecklenburg county, and they are the two largest in NC. Like I said, they see your individual grades and class rank which will tell them more about you than GPA.

I don’t think that UNC and other schools really need to recalculate gpa’s. Think about it, they must have thousands of applicants in the same position as you, and I don’t think that they could really tab those numbers in (I personally think that their fingers would be bruised from the tabbing & exercise).
Your school must have a good reason for why its grading standard is different, and UNC must have a recognizable scale that compares various other grading scales to compare your gpa. As others have certainly mentioned, you can recalculate your gpa to see where you are at, but the truth is that your school’s difficulty cannot be discriminated. What if it’s really hard? What if it’s really easy? Talk to your counselor about it b/c there are many factors that weigh in the grading scale of a school.

thanks guys
UNC doesn’t seem to favor international students
so I just wanted to know where I was standing
before the application process

Exactly. The reason people here tell “chance” thread creators to recalculate to the NC public school scale is so that we can get a feel of where you stand in comparison to everyone else. UNC has said that it takes GPAs “at face value.”

They will see grades in individual classes, and determine whether to admit or reject based on these grades and other factors. Like I said, GPA helps determine class rank, which is why it is important, but the individual grades are much more important than GPA since an “A” is an “A” regardless of weighting policy.

That being said, I do believe they recalculate when they report admitted student data on the common data sheet, because if they didn’t the numbers would be funky.
