My S changed schools last year, going from a high school on a 4 point system that gave an extra point for honors classes and apparently treats each class as a unit. His new school is a residential program at a college on the semester system, four points plus classes worth a varying degree of hours.

Any idea how you calculate his combined GPA? His new school will only count the courses he's taken there, but I'm interested in is GPA for his whole high school career.

Hmm, interesting dilemma. I'm sure colleges have methods for handling this, with the simplest being getting the multiple GPAs on the same scale and then doing a weighted average. Some high schools will add the old classes to the current transcript for the purpose of ranking, etc., but it sounds like the program your son is in doesn't do this. If in doubt, check with the admissions office of a school of interest and ask how they will do this.

Thanks. (filler, since this message has to be at least 10 characters)

Follow up: the school replied within a couple of hours. They don't calculate GPA at all (although they report the average GPA for admissions). Go figure.

Thanks again for the straight forward adivce.
