I've been hearing confusing information from my counselors and from a UC rep on how GPA is calculated for the UCs. I realize that all prior college courses and grades received must be recorded on the app, but are these courses calculated into the GPA? Is there a separate GPA that only reflects the courses that transfers to the chosen department, or something like that? (I intend to transfer to an architecture department.)

I ask because I went to another college prior to community college, and I didn't do well there. I also failed a community college course when I was in tenth grade because I forgot to drop it (!!!). But I'm in a cc now and doing much better-- with just the CC courses, my GPA would be upwards 3.8, but with my other college grades it would be more like a 3.0. Just abominably low.

I feel like I already know the answer already.. but I'd just like confirmation on how exactly the GPA works on the application. Thank you!

I’m pretty sure they only use the transferable classes, however, the non transferable will still be visible on your transcripts. I don’t think they are allowed/supposed to use classes that do not pertain to your official degree.

Thank you! But what is a UC-transferable GPA? Or rather, what are UC-transferable courses? What’s the deal with courses non transferable to a major, but are transferable to the university?

^ Iam in a similar situation as you. I went to CSU prior to community college and wasn’t sure which courses from the four year college would transfer to UC. I asked a UCSD admissions counselor and this is what they said:

“We will do a full evaluation of courses at the time of application only. Courses very similar in nature to courses taught in the UC system will transfer and will count towards your unit total. You can use your CSU catalog and online UC catalogs to determine what courses are similar.”

p.s Iam assuming that the other college you went to, prior to your cc, was a four year college.

dystaxia, CCC courses will have the designation “UC-transferable” and/or “CSU-transferable” next to the course description. For UCs that look at UC-transferable GPA, only courses labeled “UC-transferable” are used for GPA calculation. Overall GPA uses grades from ALL courses.

cici19, you won’t know which courses are UC-transferable until you apply. UCs do course evaluation on the fly while reviewing the application. Most UCs will not do pre-evaluation, so you are unfortunately in the dark throughout the process.
