Calculating your GPA

I have never understood the standardized process by which your GPA is calculated. My school calls an A+ a 4.5, an A a 4, a B+ a 3.5, etc. There are no minuses in my high school.

I've heard a lot of different things about colleges and how they find your GPA. Can somebody please tell me how this is done so I can see where I stand?

And should I count classes that aren't strictly that academic (ie half year electives like Intro to Electronics and Photography 1)?

Thank you.

Many schools recalculate your GPA. The UCs have a system, but most private universities do it differently. One popular way it's done is As= 4, Bs= 3 ... and discounting +/-s. Only academic courses are counted.
