Calculator for AP Calculus BC

Hi everyone,

This upcoming year is my senior year of high school and I will be taking AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. On the syllabus for my calc class, my teacher “highly recommends” that students have a TI-Nspire. Right now I have a TI-84. Should I get a TI-Nspire? If so, which version should I get? The CX, or the CAS CX? What’s the difference?

Thanks a lot

I have never heard of the TI-Nspire.
My sister took AP BC last year with a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition and that worked just fine. Also, the only difference between TI-84 and TI-84 Plus Sliver is that the Silver has digital screen.

I’m going to Algebra 2 Honors this upcoming year, but I still think I know the answer to this. I think a TI-84 should be fine. The reason is because before becoming a freshman, they told us to buy a TI-84 or TI-84 Plus because we would need it in all of the math classes. I do think AP Calc BC should count. AP Statistics should defiantly be fine with a TI-84 as well.

I hope this helped, and I apologize if this is wrong as I am only a sophomore.

Have a good day!

My TI-84 was fine, but if your teacher “highly recommends” a TI-Nspire you should definitely consider getting one. It might be appropriate to ask the teacher why it is highly recommended. Make an informed decision.

I never heard of the TI-Nspire LOL. I used a TI-84 Silver Edition (no color sadly) for BC and it got me through the class even though it was much older than the calculator my teacher used.

You can use the TI-84, but don’t rule out the TI-Nspire. Your teacher may use it for class activities and there may be functions on it that aren’t on the TI-84. Personally, I’d ask your teacher if the TI-84 is OK for you to use in class. See what s/he says and go from there!

Hope this helps and best of luck!
