I want to invest in a new calculator. Next year I will be in Pre-calc (if that matters) I also want to use it for the SAT's in June. Thanks!

I would get a TI-83 +. It hasn't failed me through my algebra, geometry, precalculus, and calculus courses yet, as well as through all of the collegeboard exams.

if money is short, ti-83+. if money isn't short ti-89 titanium

I've got a TI-83, which is essentially the same as a TI-83+, as far as I know, and it is extraordinary roxxin'. I love it to pieces. It gives my soul metaphorical wings when I take it out of my backpack.*

*This is a lie. But it is still nice, mostly because I am used to it.

89 Ti
Get a nice one once and for all

Go for the 89 (If you buy "non-platinum", its not even that expensive anymore). Don't listen to the 83'ers... 89 is much better.

:)

Ti-89 if you are planning on going past pre-calc

Go with the 83+

That's the one most schools use and most teacher's prefer. Most teacher's have both, but then again most students have the 83, so teacher's are forced to teach the 83. I've had numerous math classes where teacher's would say, "On your TI-83 calcultaor -- do this -- and if you had a TI-89 calculator, you would be able to do something completely different..." But he/she never would explain it... so you're better off going with the more generic calculator - the one everyone has and is more widely taught how to use. My TI-83 has helped me through Math A, B, Pre-Calc, SATs, APs, SATIIs -- can't complain at all :-D

The only thing the 83 might be better (more useful) at is the ACT. But only cause the ACT doesnt allow the 89...

:)

If you don't already have an 83+ which I assume you would by the time you've finished Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II buy one. Otherwise definately purchase the TI-89 Titanium. I recomend the titanium b/c the extra memory is useful since 89 progs seem to run large. Additionally, I use both my 89 and 83 on tests if need be. Though I rarely miss over 2-3 on the SAT's now w/o a calculator. 83's are simpler for a lot of things like matricies. 89 is a TON faster in graphing / factoring / solving equations. If I had a choice between the two for the SAT I would pick the 89 though, just because you can save more time by factoring with the 89 then you would spend w/ the extra menus when doing simple things like logarithms and matricies.

TI-89 all the way.
