Did anyone take both Calculus AB and BC? Was it a good idea or too repetitive?
It depends. At my school, AB is a year long class taken junior or senior year. Then BC is a semester long class that includes a short review of AB concepts then continues into the new BC concepts. If this is the format, then no, it won’t be.
I agree ^. It depends on your school. I know the College Board intended AB to be Calc I and BC to be bother Calc I and II, so if your school follows this model, it may seem repetitive. I know my school is trying to transition into making AB a prerequisite for BC, and both would be year-long classes. In that case, it shouldn’t really be too repetitive.
Though, if math is a harder area for a student, it may be good to take AB before BC, as it would give the student more time to grasp the ideas.
my S took both. AB jr. year; BC sr year. His high school did not give him credit for the BC as very few people took AB and BC.
We had him take both because he knew he wanted to go into a math-based career. If he had taken BC as a jr, then he’d have AP stats as a senior and it would be hard starting in higher level math in college with a year off. He started in calc 3 in college and did great.
My D took just BC, got the AP credits and had no more math to take in college as her major requires no more than one semester of calc. I guess my point is, think about what you want to study in college and that might help you decide.
@bgbg4us Thanks so much! I hope to go into engineering, so I’m planning to take both. If I were to skip AB, I would have to take online calc 2 through Ohio state, which is three periods (!) and I’ll already have calc 2 credit from BC. I might self study stats because that sounds really interesting and my school doesn’t have it!
