i’m a high school senior taking ap calc ab now, and want to know what math i should take next year. can i just retake calc I for a sem, then take a sem of stat?

bumpppppppppppppppppppp

Hi! I’m currently in 10th grade taking Advanced Algebra II Honors, and in 11th grade, I’m taking Precal Honors. That means that I take AP Calc AB in senior year and won’t have a slot for a stats class at all in high school. (I’m sure that’s perfectly acceptable, but I really really would like to take AP Stats, since I hear it’s a good class) Would it be a good idea to take Precal over the summer and skip right into AP Calc AB junior year? Does anyone know how difficult that might be?

THanks!

you don’t need stats in high school. I hear it’s a relatively easy class, people do stats instead of calculus.

Thanks! I know stats isn’t required, but it’s still a course I would like to take… how would skipping precal and directly entering AP calc AB be? difficult???

If you you’re dedicated to learn everything during the summer, then definitely go for it. Make sure you talk to your counselor first.

OK thanks!

If you make a score that gives you college credit for Calc AB, then your plan will work for all but a few med schools. I can’t remember them all, but the main ones are some of the UC schools.

As I posted before on this thread and others, you really need to check each school’s website and they don’t make this easy to find.

My kid had AP credit for BC so she just took stats. Some schools are off-limits because of that decision, but she knew that going in.

I took calc about 4 years ago, and I took business Statistics, is that good for the math requirement?? I also took about 2 years of finance classes, which is different that calc and stats…but math all the same. Do those count for the requirements?

Hello! I will be going to Cornell University next year. I have a question concerning this topic. I have taken and received credit for Calculus I and II. Should I accept my credits and go to the higher level, risking my GPA and comfort zone in my freshman year? The con here being I will be dealing with new concepts and knowledge, but the pro being the fact that I will be able to attain higher levels of math (diff Qs, or linear algebra) Or should I decline my credits, take the lower level, ensuring a GPA foundation/buffer for the future? The con here being that I may not be able to attain higher levels, but I will feel more secure with my GPA and it will be easier to adjust to from high school.

I’d love some input.
Thanks!

My D. used Calc AP Credit and took college Stats. That was good for Med. Schools on her list. Nobody knows, except Med. Schools Adcoms. She contacted several of hers and it was OK with them. Overall, D. mentioned that while Calc is practically useless for pre-meds, Stats are used widely in Med. Research Labs procedures. Unless you have personal interests in math or reguired by Med. School on your list, there is no need for more math than 2 semesters. D. has been accepted to 50% of Med. Schools that she has applied.

D1 and D2 both took the credit and moved onward. (CAVEAT: each took/are taking a second major in applied math.)

FWIW, Calc 3 is much easier than Calc 2 according to both Ds.

But if you want a more gradual adjustment to college, take Calc 2 over. There’s material in the standard Calc 2 class that isn’t covered by AP Calc BC.

Hey! So I’ve read through this thread, and generally it seems like it is recommended to take Calc I and II as well as another course in Math (Statistics) if you have taken Calc AB. Or if you have taken BC, to take Calc III and Stats? What is you have credit for AB, BC, and Statistics as well? Will it be looked down upon if you go ahead and take stat again? Or Calc II again? Do I even need to?

It depends where your calc and stats credits come from.

If you’ve earned them thru AP exams, then you probably need to retake stats in college and either retake a calc class (1 or 2, it’s up to you. Most med school only require 1 semester of calc) or take the next higher level math class.

Why? because med schools are quirky about whether they accept AP credit for math classes. Most won’t; some do. If you don’t have actual college math credits on your transcript, you’ll be very limited as to where you can apply to med school later on.

My rec—retake stats, retake Calc 2 since you’ve already had BC. You’re good to go for just about everywhere then. And you won’t be “looked down on” for retaking them. Some schools won’t allow science majors advanced standing for AP classes in bio or chem and make their students retake those classes. Medical school admissions don’t ‘penalize’ them. Same goes for math.

If this were a lab science, I might have different advice. But since math courses (usually) don’t have labs, I highly doubt any medical school will care if you take Calc II or Calc III or Differential Equations.

My advice is to take Calc III instead of Calc II (assuming you feel confident about your Calc I-II abilities). Even if it is a slightly harder class, at least you won’t be bored out of your mind. I took an introductory statistics course, and although I literally learned nothing new (I had taken AP Stats two years prior), my grade was at times in danger of dropping down from an A. Not because I didn’t know the material, but because I couldn’t have cared less about the class. Plus, if you ever get to the point where you would want to understand multivariate distributions and analyses, multivariable calculus will at least be minimally helpful.

If you feel confident enough, consider taking an upper level statistics course instead of an introductory one. But definitely take a stats course of some sort in college.

Thanks so much!! :)

My S took precal & AP stats in hs. He didn’t do well on the placement test and will have to take precal again. One year of precal is a prereq for cal at his college. So, is the one year of precal & AP stats sufficient? Or could he do one semester of precal & one semester of stats in college. He really hates math and it won’t be kind to his gpa.

If I counted correctly, only 9-12 schools explicitly require calculus, and many of those are “upper-tier”. The semester of statistics really should be taken in college; many places won’t accept AP credit for it. So a semester of precalculus and a semester of statistics should do; just be sure to check the requirements of the schools he really will want to apply to (e.g. state schools) and make sure that such a plan fits their requirements.
