I'm on a premed track and probably majoring in biochemistry or biology. I got a 3 on my AP Calc AB Exam (barely studied last year), and a 6 on my IB math methods exam this year. So, I "technically" have the credit to skip Calc I but my advisor told me not to...

Right now I'm deciding between Honors Calculus I, Calc 2 for AP students, or just Gen Calc 1. Is the honors calculus series tougher than the general series? And is Calc 2 for AP reasonable for someone with my scores?

Since I'm pre-med, I was wondering how med schools look at it too. Is it better to retake calc 1 or does skipping to 2 look better? Also, since some med schools require 2 semesters of calc...would I have to take calc 3 if I skipped to calc 2? Or in the end does it just not matter what calc courses you take lol?

Sorry for asking so many questions, I'm just hearing different things from people! ^^ I read the other thread but my score/major/pre-med track situation is a little bit different...

Most my premed friends went with retaking calc 1. That way you can not worry about the 2 semester thing, and it SHOULD be reasonable to get an A.

Your score high enough to do calc 2 (6 on methods) but there’s really no reason unless you have some desire to do higher level math.

i was in a similar situation and took calc 1. the calculus was easy peasy, but the precalc aspects were much harder than they were in AP calc. everyone i know who was in calc 2 said it was much less precalc intensive, and in retrospect i wish i had taken calc II for AP students.

i scraped by with an A so no harm done, but i could have just easily gotten a C after doing very poorly on the first 2 tests due to precalc issues.

I think if you reviewed some basic calculus principles in the next couple of weeks, you could take Calc 2 for AP students and do well. After taking Calc 2 you could choose to take Differential Equations instead of Calc 3. Diff EQ relates more to Calc 2 than Calc 3 does and if you hate vectors (as much as I do) it’s right up your alley! But if you don’t like math in general, I’d suggest you do Calc 1/Calc 2.

Also, Honors classes aren’t really harder. I took Calc 3 and Diff EQ honors, and neither one was bad. I did almost nothing in Calc 3 and got a B, and did a little more work in Diff EQ but got an A. I think the honors professors are a lot more chill :)

Thank you all so much! I think I’m going to go ahead and just do Calc I honors since honors doesn’t sound much harder. And since it doesn’t matter much for premed, I’d rather just stick to the Calc I/Calc II sequence instead of skipping to Calc 2/3 for no reason.
