Im taking a Calculus 1 Class this summer, its actual calculus and not the waterdown thing that some schools offer. Now the class was $250 a credit and the school that it is at sucks and its not my home school, but its local so i took it. The class is 4 credits so about $1000 for tuition, which is very low for NYC.

So Im having trouble in the class for just the first week. The teacher is really bad as he comes 20 minutes late everyday, as well as takes a half and hour break for all the classes and then lets the class out 1 hour early. Its a 3 hour class. The teacher also really teachers fast but its not a good fast. as he is just repeditive but not clear.

so I have some options.

1. Drop the class and Loose 50% of my Tuition, because thats all the school will refund and then take the class at a slower pace in the Fall. But I will get back around $500.

2 Keep Taking the class and probrolly fail it, but then in general will loose the full $1000.

Well, my son took two years of calc in hs, and he re-took calc I in college so he would get a good grade, which he did easily. Many of his classmates had a difficult time taking it over a normal semester. Some who felt confident took an accellerated course that combined two semesters of calc into one semester...and many found this to be really tough.

The good thing about taking it in the summer is that you have lots of time to work on it without detracting from your other studies. I wonder if you could get a tutor? How about a study group? Do you have a recitation with a TA who could help? The first week is pretty early to decide...how long until the add/drop period ends?

If you do decide to drop it and retake it in the fall, I would be darned sure to get an instructor with reputation for being a good and helpful teacher.

I really dont have time between school and work to really do as well as I want.

ad for the TA's at this school Lehman college the TA's which arent TA's they are volenteers only tutor for Intermediate Algebra and below. No calc.

Oooo. That doesn't sound too promising. If they were in your situation, i would advise my kids to go with their hearts. Only they know how bad the teacher is or how confused they are. $500 is worth avoiding an F. Maybe you should get out while the gettin's good!

dude-Dont drop it.Seriously.Thats just throwing away $500(PS 3/two ipods).Make friends with the people in your class-Try and find the hardworking ones who frequently go to the library- in groups- to study.
