I'm going into engineering during the fall and my mom thinks that I need to take calculus during the summer so I am prepared. I agree that I should know some calculus beforehand, but I already took Calculus AB during my senior year. We didn't have a very good teacher, so I don't think I passed the AP exam but I learned the basics and should be ahead of most of the kids going into calculus. So, is it worth it to hire a private tutor charging $35 an hour to teach me calculus, despite me knowing some already?

why don’t you just take cal at a local community college in the summer, that way you’ll manage to avoid at least part of the very hard calculus courses at UT assuming you get credit (either 2 or 3 semester sequence) and you’ll gain a more expansive knowledge of calculus.

By the way, I wouldn’t really think you have a leg up on anyone in calculus next year. While you might be better off than the people who took precal their senior year, a tremendous number of people who have already taken calculus (and know it quite well) retake calculus despite getting 3s-5s on their exams as a GPA booster. I’ve seen this observation repeated many times on this website and just from personal experience even rank 3, 22, and 5 (out of a class of 1433) at my school and nearly all of my AP Physics: C class (which consists of the best students at my school) are gonna be retaking cal next year. From what you’ve said, it doesn’t look like you know too much calculus due to your bad teacher (happened to me too man) although of course, you could just be being modest here.

The only community college I have access to doesn’t have calculus during the summer.
