Calculus I (Questions about getting full AP Credit)

http://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/ap-ib-credit

I got a 5 on AB last year.

It says 2 credits for the AP, plus 2 more credits to upon completion of the course.

I want to get full credit, but I heard it’s a weeder class and I’m even going into math or science, so is it worth it to take it?

Hopefully pre-Ross

If you did very well in Calc AB and you understand the information fully, Calc 1 is a breeze. I got a 5 on the AP test but took Calc 1 and got an A+. It is extremely poorly taught, which is why it is so hard for people. I learned literally nothing because of how awful my GSI was, but I already knew the information so I did well. I would take it to get the full credit and a very good grade will look good for Ross.

If you took AP Calc AB, then you should take Calc 2 in order to get the full credit on Calc 1. If you take Calc 1 again, you are not claiming the AP credit at all.

@billcsho I am taking BC Calc this year, does that mean I would have to start out with Calc 3 to get credit for the first two?

@illinoisgolf that’s exactly what I was hoping to hear. Thank you!

@ErenYeager Yes, you need to take Math 174, 175, 176, 185, 186, 215, 216, 285, 255, 256, or 295 and receive a C or higher in order to get 2 more credits for 120 and 2 more credits for 121. Otherwise you only get 2 credits from each (assuming you get 5 in AP exam). If you get a 4 in AP Calc BC, you only get 2 credits for Calc1 but you can get 2 more credits after you get C or above in Calc2.
