Out of the two, which is easier/better to take as a freshman majoring in ECE?

i'm taking calc in 3 dimensions right now and I don't think it's that difficult...I've heard diff eq is harder.

Calc in 3D is easier than diffeq.

If you take diffeq this fall, John Tolle (a hippie with a very dry sense of humor) will be teaching it. If you think you might get a kick out of that, give it a look. However, Calc in 3D is taught by an excellent (boring, but very smart and an excellent teacher) professor this fall (Jack Schaeffer) so take that into consideration also.

I second everything that ThinkDifferent says.

As to which one is better for you as an ECE major... look at the course catalog http://www.cmu.edu/esg-cat/ and see if there are any courses you want to take as an upperclassman that require one or the other as a prerequisite.

Hey Basher,

I'm ECE and have taken both as a freshman and think it's important to do so. In upperlevel ECE courses its important to know how to integrate with triple integrals and it's also important to know how to solve a differential equation.

I'd suggest taking 3D first semester (because it's easier and you're adjusting) and take diffy second semester. To be honest, there are some things (like how to partially differentiate) you learn in 3D that are useful in diffy. So this sequence works quite well.

Thank you!! I am going to sign up for 3D and do diff eq next semester.
