My DS will be choosing his classes at Orientation in a few weeks. He isn’t very good at math. I took Finite Math and remember having to have a tutor, and remember it as quite challenging. I never took Calculus. My older DS had to take Pre-Calc again in college and said that Calculus was much easier than Pre-Calc.
My DS2 is fairly good at learning math and regurgitating it…but becomes confused and lost with more application of what he is learning in math…or multiple steps. I know neither are “easy”…you have to go to class, do the work, get tutors. But I’d like to help him decide on the one that would be easiest for his abilities. Any help is appreciated.
Depends on the major, since some require Calc. But if he only has to take one college math class and then is done with math, Finite is a no-brainer. Calc 1 will be full of premeds who are gunning for A’s; many will already have aced Calc BC with a 5, but are ‘repeating’ the course in college for the ‘easy’ A. The curve in Calc 1 is brutal.
Thanks Bluebayou. He will be taking just one math course as it is required in the core courses. So…finite it will be. He’ll just need to line his tutor up at the beginning and stick with it.
Most often students struggle with these courses due to poor algebra skills. Any chance he can practice those over the summer?
Where @sylvan8797? At the Sylvan Learning Center?
^I was thinking more like The Dining Room Table.
He had to take the ALEKS placement exam to find out what he was allowed to take in college. You can pay $50 to continue with these modules to help you out and keep learning stuff for the next 6 months. I can promise you he won’t over the summer.
