you can spend anytime in between sections, as long as you complete the entire test in less than one day.

you should be able to go to 21-259/21-260. take 21-259 with me!

I think they'll give you credit to let you take Calc in 3d next semester.

go to http://www.cit.cmu.edu/default.aspx?id=352 to take the test

So I was wondering how they let you know what course you have been placed in. Does your advisor email you?

I was also wondering if anyone who took the exam in the previous years could tell us what they scored and what course they were placed in.

Somewhere in the first week of august, you can go to www.cmu.edu/hub SIO to check what AP credit you got.

I got 37 and was placed into 21-123. I had 800's on Math SAT I and IIc. But I didnt take any AP's as I was international. Hope this helps!

I think I also got a 37 (missed 3 questions on the differential equations part of the test); I know I had a 5 on Calc BC AP. I'm pretty sure that SAT scores aren't used in calculus placement (since they have nothing to do with calculus). I received credit for both 21-120 and 21-122, so I took 21-241 (Matrix Algebra).

Every student from every school at carnegie mellon must take the placement test. Correct?

kanagawajin- well, based on what lildude_ravi & KrazyKow wrote, i don't think i can join u in 21-259 .. :(

fool- what do you mean by next semester? this fall? or spring 2007?

rmac2188- i think so..

I think that lildude_ravi was placed in 15-123 because he had no AP or IB score; if he did, he probably would have received credit for it.

The only pre-req for 21-259 is 21-120, so you could take 21-259 and 21-122 at the same time if you wanted.

What do people normally take if they place out of Calculus? I got a 39 (the one I got wrong was in the algebra section) and I got a 5 on BC Calc.

Rmac2188 - people who don't have a calculus graduation requirement (like design kids, etc) don't have to take the placement test.

SugarCube: If you place out of calculus, what you take depends on your major. Typical choices are 21-241 (Matrix Algebra, required for CS unless you take 21-341, linear algebra), 21-259 (Calculus in 3D, I think required for engineering and taken by CS majors who want to take computer graphics), and 21-260 (Differential Equations, taken by people who... like diff eq and calculus, I guess, required for computational finance). Alternatively, you can take a random course you're interested in or a statistics course, since most majors require one.

Hmm...I got a total of 31/40. But, my breakdown is a little funny.
Algebra- 6/10 (oops!!)
Elementary functions- 5/6
Differentiation- 10/11
Integration- 6/7
Differential Equations- 4/6
Where do you think they'll put me? BTW, I have a 5 on Calc AB, a 3 Calc BC with 5 AB subscore, SAT Math 1 790, SAT Math 2 800.

I'm about to take the test - I was wondering approximately how long you guys spent on it. Did it take you the full 2 hours?

i spent abt an hour and 40 min...wanted to get done with it asap!!

chocolateluvr: That's an interesting breakdown. Since you got a 3 on Calc BC, I would think you'd start in 21-122, but if not for that and the algebra score, you might have been able to place out of both semesters of calculus. Work on your algebra! :)

Hahaha!! That reminds me of the facebook group named "I love calculus and differential equations."

KrazyKow, do you have a general idea of how well one needs to score (AP exam and placement exam) to place out of 21-120 and 21-122?

I don't want to post the score here because then people may go complain to Pattis and/or the math department about the cutoffs changing from year to year (which makes sense if the test changes). Plus, last year the cutoffs changed several times, so who knows how they'll be. I will say that the placement last year took into account only AP and placement test score (for granting 21-120 and 21-122 credit) and was dependent on overall and differential+integration placement test scores. However, initially last year only differential score was used, so even this may change.

I finished the placement test yesterday, and was just wodnering if anyone else got any kind of notification that they had finished? I know I completed and submitted each section, but the placement exam still shows up on my "blackboard" and I didn't see any kind of summary page at the end, like with a score out of 40. Did everyone else just add up your individual scores or did you actually see some sort of end page?
