I took AB calculus in high school and received good grades. I was sick the day of the AP test and got a 3 so I didn't receive credit for calc at IU. I took the calc test at orientation last fall. I think a score of 18 was needed to receive credit. I received a 17. I would really like to avoid taking calculus at IU and pay out-of-state tuition to learn material that I already mostly know.

I contacted a bunch of people and found out how to take the exemption test aka the departmental final.

I only need to receive a B. The grade does not go into my GPA. If I do worse than a B, that does not go on my transcript. If I get a B or higher, than "S" for "satisfactory" goes on my transcript, and I get my calculus credit required for Kelley.

My question is: M211 or M119?

M119 is supposedly easier, but from what I've heard, M211 would be more like what I did in high school. And to prepare, I'll be studying the Princeton Review and my high school notes. A math advisor I'm emailing with told me that the M211 class never allows calculators. Students do use calculators in M119, although she is not sure to what extent they are used on the exam. No calculators in M211 means easier numbers then, right?

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how I could prepare? Professors probably wouldn't give me practice tests, right?

Thanks!

Have you checked out IU’s math department website? According to the course description, M119 is the recomended course for business students. There is a M119 midterm with answer key and suggested problem sets for M119 on the website. I couldn’t find any posted exams for M211.

I’d never taken calc before, but I too ended up in the M-119, M-211 conundrum. The way that it was explained to me by my advisor was that M-119 was business calc, more geared towards “here’s a formula, use it”. M-211 is more theoretical, “here’s what we need to do, lets derive a formula that accomplishes that task, and here’s why it works”, a little more nuts and bolts. I ended up taking M-211, because my advisor thought that a 21 on the math exam meant that I was a genius (i’m an algebra and geometry whiz, so yeah I did well because that was the majority of the test!), and struggling - I ended up with a C :(. But I noticed that almost every kid around me had taken calc before, so I’d probably go with 211 based on your background.

My son said his freshman year that he knew a lot of Kelley or pre-Kelley kids that did well enough on the placement test to have a choice between M119 and M211, and that a lot of them made a big mistake for them in taking M211. Some the material was over their heads and they wound up dropping. There weren’t even particularly strong at math; they just scored really well on the test, maybe because of luck, and their advisers nudged them into taking M211. M211 meets four times a week, and some of the M119 sections only meet twice a week, so that adds to the stress of what will already be a hectic first semester in college.

36% (297 our of 833) of all the kids who took M211 last Fall either dropped it or got an “F”. Considering that a huge number of these students probably tested into the class, there is something wrong with the placement test. 45% (378 out of 833) got a C- or lower. In other words, if they were Kelley students, the class did nothing for them, as C- does not meet the requirement to take I-Core. For people trying to get into Kelley, C- or lower is really bad. If I were trying to get into Kelley, I would avoid M211 at all costs.

Kelley wants all B’s or higher for standard admission. Only 273 or 833 in last Fall’s M211 got a B or higher. Not a good way to start your career at IU if you are trying to get into Kelley.

I took m119 in the fall and the final was HARD. I came out of the final thinking I got 100% but I ended up with a 16/20. If your going to take the final, I highly suggest you to get a tutor.

So im planning to take M-119 in the fall since I already took calculus in high school. I want to take it while its still fresh in my mind. I’m a standard admit trying to get into kelley and the teachers available are hendrickson, whelan, and levenberg. I would take hendrickson but theres only 5 spots left. Should i still take M-119 in the fall if i get whelan or levenberg. I heard they are pretty bad. I could take 118 with dabrowski in the fall then take 119 in the spring.

Hendrickson would probably be the best, based on the grade distributions. But it will probably be filled by the time you register? In that case, Whelen looks better than Levenberg on grading. I think it is a good idea to take calculus in the Fall.

I think it is not necessary and even very risky to take Finite in the Spring if you are taking calculus in the Fall. You don’t need to have taken both classes to get into Kelley. So taking Finite would add a lot of risk, since it is a tough grading class. You could take Finite at a cc in the summer, or take it your sophomore year at IUB-- after getting into Kelley. With all Bs and above, you will get into Kelley without having taken Finite.

Just make sure that you take BUS X100, BUS K201, and calculus all your freshman year.

My son is going to be a Kelley Living Learning Community (KLLC) resident trying to get into Kelley after freshman year. We are paying TOP dollars for IUB as out of State residents so he has a LOT of pressure to make it into Kelley, otherwise we may need to change our college plans and go to a less expensive institution. He decided to take 13 credits in the Fall and 15 in the Spring. I would like to know how difficult are the following classes and what is your suggestion to increase his chances to get into Kelley next year.

i would tell him to try and get above a B+ for k-201 so he can become a peer tutor during the spring semester. if your son wants to be on the safe side, i would tell him to get at least a B+ on all the courses especially the kelley pre-reqs.
