Hey guys, I have a quick question about Calday and the OHP.
1.) Some of my friends got the bridge program, but not the OHP. What's the difference? I think I have to pay $60 but his is free.
2.) I'm going to the OHP on April 19th-20th, and Calday is on April 20th. Which one is more important, and can I attend both?

I’m going to the OHP too!
Honestly, I’d say that will give you more of an idea about whether Cal is for you or not because it’s overnight… I know I’m only going to OHP because of that and my family is meeting me after it’s over so I can show them around and we don’t have to attend on the 20th! Congrats on getting into Cal :)

OHP is simply where you go and stay with a student overnight, and do things like tour the campus and basically experience student life. I’d strongly suggest going to Cal day (yes, I’m pretty sure you can go to both) and I’d say they’re equally important. OHP gives you the student perspective of Cal, while Cal Day shows you what social and academic opportunities are available for you.

Thanks for your responses guys! I’m so excited to go to Cal!
Do you guys know anything about the cost of going to the OHP? I heard something about them flying them to Cal for free?

The Bridges one is more geared towards underpriviledged, first generation, underrepresented minorities. It’s the school’s way of trying to reach out and recruit a more diverse student base. When the students get to campus, they get split up into various RRC (Recruitment and Retention Centers) usually depending on ethnicity. Aside from seeing what Cal is all about, the students also attend some workshops that are meant to empower them. I don’t know about the other retention centers, but the one I’m involved with gets pretty emotional and we do see a lot of tears.

The Overnight Host Program is open to everyone. It’s a bit shorter and is simply meant for you to fall in love with Cal. I don’t think OHP flies the students in for free (Bridges does though), but it’s a really beneficial experience if you can afford it. I’ve hosted several times and by the end of the program my hostees seemed pretty sure whether or not they wanted to come here. You should be able to go to Cal Day as well if you’re doing OHP. Cal Day is basically like a giant open house for people to come check out everything the school has to offer.
