calendar question

So I'm out of state and my parents are getting ready to buy my plane tickets for the year while they are still cheap to go back and forth for the holidays. On the calendar it says the winter quarter starts Jan. 3 but classes dont start until Jan. 8. Do we need to be back by beginning of the quarter or just in time for classes? My interpretation is that we would just need to be back before classes start but my parents are kind of freaking out and I don't know where else to find the answer to this.

you need to be back in time for classes....that's if you should choose to go to class at all.
they deliberately give you that week of leeway because of circumstances like yours, and that they know people will be coming back from all over the country this winter. Suffice it to say that you should be back sometime within that week....unless you have a job or something, in which case it would behoove you to be back on the third.

great, thanks!

yeah it's basically your choice when you want to be back between jan 3 and jan 8.

Yes, I can also confirm that the Winter quarter move-in period is anytime between Jan. 3 and Jan. 8, although the dining halls probably won't open until Jan. 4/5 or so.
