My situation changed from when I first submitted my Fafsa- that is, my father is getting laid off this May (and my mom works only works a part time job as a lunch lady). I was not awarded calgrant, and I want to submit an appeal, but the thing is, I'm completely CLUELESS. Is my dad's getting laid off grounds for an appeal?

Appeal form:
http://www.csac.ca.gov/pubs/forms/grnt_frm/G-18_calgrantappealsform.pdf

Should I be checking "financial hardship" under the reason for appeal, or should I be checking "Other"?

I don’t think the fact that your dad is going to lose his job in May is grounds to appeal Cal Grant …which is based on last year’s earnings. Technically, your dad is still employed. He may even get a severance.

Besides, your dad has 2 months to find another job. I doubt Cal Grant is going to do anything since your dad is still employed.

Schools don’t usually consider unemployment is a problem until a person is unemployed for 3 - 6 months (which for your day would be Aug/Nov. Schools assume that parents will find new jobs within a few months. They don’t want to make adjustments only to have the parent quickly find another job.

Since your dad is the primary breadwinner, he probably is super motivated to find another job (not to say that any unemployed person isn’t motivated) and may have another job lined up before the May job ends.

Thanks so much mom2collegekids! I forgot to mention the fact that my dad is actually on a disability and really can’t find much work. He’s been on what his job called a “permanent temporary” disability leave (I’m not really sure if it means permanent… or temporary, really, but he’s been on that for the most of this year). He used to be a mechanic.

I’m definitely hoping that my dad will be able to find another job, but his knowledge of the English language is extremely limited and he is unable to do work being a mechanic anymore-- does this change things at all?

Thanks so much for the help!

hmmmm

Will he be considered permanently disabled?

You need to contact your school about your situation. They might be able to tell you how to proceed with Cal Grant. Cal Grant is strongly related to income of the previous year.

What is your family’s plan for income for the family? Can your dad be considered permanently disabled?

BTW…was your dad injured on the job? If so, then he needs to seek compensation for that.
