I am transferring to UCSD as of Fall 2009. I have a 3.4 GPA, independent status (aka Estimated Family Contribution = 0), former foster youth and 20 years old. I also filed my fafsa on time and my college sent my GPA verification out. My official aid letter said I received Pell Grant which equal about $5,000, the rest are loans, NO CALGRANT. I didn't even get a UCSD grant. I am pretty sure I should AT LEAST qualify for a Calgrant considering my EFC is 0 and my GPA is pretty good? Is it because of the budget crisis or what? Anyone else have this problem?

Two suggestions:
- Log onto the website specifically for CalGrants, and see what that tells you about your application and the status.

Call UCSD’s financial aid office and ask to speak to a financial aid officer.

I hope that this is just a paperwork mixup and that you’ll quickly learn that there is indeed Calgrant money available to you, but even so, I’m surprised that with your circumstances that the University didn’t provide any grant aid outside of Calgrants. That makes me think that there may be a more complex issue here.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Did you file the FAFSA on time? Are you transferring from a CC? Did you already have a Cal Grant there? Has Cal Grant paperwork ever been done (GPA verification in your HS senior year?)
