I am interested in applying to clemson and want to study engineering there. My stats are: 3.9gpa 1320 sat 30 act top 10%of class
I'm wondering about the out of state tuition waiver, what is the act score minimum, i know the sat is 1350. Also does anyone know if you can combine sat subscores to reach the 1350?
From what i here the 1350 and top 10% are also needed for calhoun honors college, I am aslo wondering the act equivelant.
Also do any clemson students know the drop out rate of engineering at clemson? my tour guide there said it was near 70%!
Thanks in advance

When we visited last summer an admissions counselor mentioned 31 ACT score. I would call to be sure.

My son will be starting this fall in engineering in the honors college. I would say your son has a chance of getting in the honors college. Each year the minimum scores go up for honors. The OSS waiver is also great. I have heard that you may have a better chance by applying early. I think your son should review the SAT/ACT practice tests and retake them in the fall and send them to the school afterwards. ( I wouldn't wait to hand the application later.) All schools will always use the best combined score( from any date) for the SAT, but that does not apply to the ACT. The honors program is one of the best and the honors dorm is really nice. I think Clemson is an amazing school that is unrecognized. The professors seem to be really caring. The engineering program is excellent and the school is well balnced with happy students unlike other engineering schools. Good luck!

P.S. I think that all engineering programs have a high dropout rate, but I think Clemson does alot to help the student. I would check with the general engineering department.

My son is going into his 2nd year in Clemson Engineering. Not sure what the cut-off was for SAT or ACT to get the OOS tuition waiver or Honors, but his was 1390 SAT (best combined) & 28 ACT (he did not send this one in). He did get both the waiver & honors. I must tell you... one of the best things about the OOS scholarship & honors is the minimum GPA requirement in order to keep them. I really believe it gave my son the incentive he needed to do well his freshman year, because without the scholarship he knew he would be heading back to NY. He loves Clemson & is eagar to return next month!

As far as the 70% drop out rate... that seems like it may be a bit exagerated. I can't imagine it could be that high. I will ask my son if he knows anything about it. I will say that one of the reasons he picked Clemson over some of the "tech" schools is because if he decided that Engineering wasn't for him, he would have plenty of other options when switching majors.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the response! I plan on taking the SAT in the fall. Also I recieved a letter in the mail saying I was provisionally accepted because of my SAT score and High school record. What is provisional acceptance?
Thanks for the help

also what is the gpa your son has to mantain to stay qualified for the oos tuition waiver?

I asked my son about the 70% drop out for engineering and he said "no way!" He does not know what it is though.
Not sure about the provisional acceptance, but I would agree that taking the SAT again would probably be beneficial. The minimum gpa to keep OOS scholarship is 3.0 and to stay in Honors is 3.4.

For this past year, the cut off was 1350 "old school" SAT for the OOS waiver. According to admissions it will probably increase agains this upcoming year based on the continued strength of applications.

My OOS daughter (I'm an alum) had 1340 on SAT and a 3.9 GPA did not get the waiver or into the honors college. College of Charleston offered OOS and honors college admissions. However, she chose a different college altogether.

ain't that some ****, I Had 1390 and 32 but didn't get anything from the university...apparently 2 years makes a bit of a difference

I believe that it is a 3.5 GPA, 1300 SAT, and top 10%. That is what a parent of a student that was class of '06 told me. Just in case anyone is still wondering...

i just received the waiver, from what admissions said this summer the minumum SAT was 1350

My son is a freshman at Clemson in engineering and is in the honors college. He got a provisional acceptance as a junior and then was accepted upon applying in his senior year. He didn't receive an oss tuition waiver until they got his ACT scores where were good - 32. Also got an offer for the honors college. I think the threshold is 1350 SAT and 30 ACT. He loves Clemson and loves living in the honors dorm. You need to keep a 3.40 to remain in the honors dorm. One thing they do that is really nice is that all engineering students go into general engineering where they discuss the aspects and responsibilities of all types of engineering and then they can make a more informed decision on which is right for them.

I don't believe that the dropout rate for engineers is that high, but I do know that the first year general engineering class is very tough. I am in the honors college, but I decided not to stay in the dorm because I had a non-honors roommate request. I do have a lot of friends in the dorm though, and it seems like a great place to stay.
