Alright I'm a first semester at a cali community college and I'm taking IGETC, actually i will because i've decided that I did not want to apply as a business major (Unfortunately taking some business classes, but doing well). Anywho, Assuming that I finish IGETC within two years and transfer as a junior with a major in poli sci or history and a high gpa 3.7-3.9ish. What would you think my chances are at these schools.

UCB
UCLA
USC
University of Virginia
Carnegie Mellon
NYU
Univ. of Michigan
Northwestern
Tulane
Wake Forest
Idk about any other colleges, im open minded

My Ec's are:
Assistant Coach for my former high school speech & debate team
Optimist Club (closely tied to volunteer work)
Lions Club (same as the other)

My hs stats suck: GPa: 3.3 (very mediocre) and sats:around the 1000's
Would i get turned down for my hs stats? Thanks a bunch!!!
advice or any other ideas that could boost my chances would be much appreciated

You should schedule an appointment with a counselor at your cc because there appears to be many things you need answered. You won't need your hs transcripts at all for the UC's unless you plan to transfer as a sophmore meaning 30+ units not the 60+ you would need as a junior. From what youv'e said assuming you will do igetc your chances at berkeley or any other uc is high because you are a cali resident. That's the great thing about cc you get a 2nd chance if you bombed in hs.

I agree with mexbruin. Also, I think you might be looking too far ahead. As far as the schools you're looking at, if you can keep the GPA you say you can keep then you'll get into a couple of them. If you can't keep that GPA, add one of the UCs to your list.

you still need to submit high school transcripts to the UC when u get accepted. anyhow, try to do transfer agreements with the UCs by taking specific classes. thats what I did with UCSB for sociology. I really wanna get into UCLA though. Doing the IGETC isn't always enuff.

THanks for your replys, and after some intensive research at the UC's.
I kinda figure this is my list

UCB
UCSD
UCLA
UCSB

You see even if I complete all my requirements for these schools, following the IGETC thing, I still won't sufficiently fulfill the out state schools like Northwestern or Tulane, etc. I wish there was some solid nationally known formula that could be applied to them. I feel like if i were to finish all my requirements, i'd be 25 before i transfer lol. okay not likely, it would feel like I was 25, any advice on whether to pursue out of state schools for undergraduate work or graduate work? Also whats better for graduate work, heading into law, business or getting my masters for graduate work. If I was majored in International Studies, or something along the lines of goverment related studies. I wanna end up working as mainstream as I can interms of politics.

I was just wondering, what would you think would be the least impacted major for Berkeley?

History
Ethnic Studies
Geography
Legal Studies

Thanks again, this is more helpful then counselors are at my college lol.

You can't really say what is better graduate work. It is what you make of it. If you decide to pursue law, business, or enter a PhD program make sure its what you really want... don't just go into a career based on $$$$ or prestige. Figure out what your interests lie and pursue a career along those lines. You will be taking a diverse number of courses that will allow you to "test the waters" who knows you might end up doing sociology or psychology. I, personally, switched from business to biology and realized that polotics is my forte. I eventually want to teach at the community college level. Good luck, hang in there 2 years goes by really fast. I stayed at my cc 3 years and it was a breeze dont get discourqged by the number of "idiots" who aren'y over hs and just go to community college for the sake of going and keeping busy until they find a 9-5 minimum wage job. As far as the least impacted major at Cal I would have to guess it is a toss up between geography and ethnic studies but recently every major at the UC's have become impacted due to budget cuts and the sheer number of people who apply for admission each year.
