Are there any CA families out there looking for MT programs here on the West Coast? We’re specifically looking for programs where they don’t cut. Our D is super talented (as most kids here on this forum) but she’d rather know from the beginning if she is what they’re looking for, then be one or two years in and be turned away. I know that she would not do well with that kind of stress. D is currently a junior and has the academic stats to get her in anywhere btw.
We are from California and we also did not want a BFA program that cut students. I believe the University of Arizona and Cal State Fullerton have cut programs. The closest programs we found to California were Northern Colorado which is a BA (but the curriculum is similar to that of a BFA) and Central Washington (my daughter did not apply there so I don’t know much about it). Chico State also has a BA in musical theatre, as does Cal State East Bay, but we didn’t look at those programs because my daughter didn’t want to go to those schools. Irvine has an audition later program. Not a lot of selection here on the West Coast unfortunately.
UCLA has a BA in MT.
USC has an MT minor.
Utah has a BFA in MT.
University of Washington has a fairly new BA in MT.
San Diego State has a Theatre BA - Emphasis in Performance: Acting and Musical Theatre
Pepperdine has a BA in Theatre and Music (training in dance is fairly limited)
Central Washington University has a strong BFA, not well known but I personally know of many talented kids in the program including one who was accepted at NYU but didn’t think the price justified the training over CWU.
Thank you @EmsDad. What do you know, if anything, about the program at CSSD? @evilqueen do the students at CWU have access to professional companies? The campus seems to be in the middle of nowhere lol.
@MTheaterMom - I don’t know anything about the program at San Diego State (at least I think that is the school that you referred to as CSSD - I know it as SDSU).
Thanks again for the information @EmsDad. I haven’t been on the site for long and didn’t realize it was San Diego State and not Cal State San Diego. I feel like I have found a gold mine with this site and so appreciate everyone’s information and feedback. This process is just beginning for us and I think there’s a part of me that’s not ready for my D (our first) to go away. She is interested in colleges across the county. It’s her dad and I that want her to consider staying in California.
Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle also offers Musical Theatre.
I don’t know anything about the program, but I have heard a lot of buzz around San Diego State. The music director of Pace’s MT program just took over there in 2013 as director of their MFA program – Robert Meffe.
@MTheaterMom - CWU is in the middle of nowhere. (I went there). Good program, but don’t believe they have access to any companies due to the location. I do know several kids who graduated from the program who are working professionally in Portland.
