california here we come...hopefully

For on Out of stater with a 3.85 (UW), top10% rank, all possible honors/AP classes at competitive private school, and good extra curriculars (nothing insanely awesome), what would be a good total UC sat score (Sat1+ 2(sat2 math+sat 2 writing+ 3rd score)) to get into UCSD, ucla, ucB?

my total is 5780 (800 writing, 700 lit, 700 math, 1380 sat1). ..

i know these schools are really hard for out of staters, but i just wanna know if i have ANY chance of gettin in (especially ucsd!)

gracias folks

PinkPanther36:

UCB: Reach (out of state)
UCLA: Reach (out of state)
UCSD: Match (out of state)

hey flopsy- do you know if UCSD places big emphasis on the essay/activities part as much as the SAT/gpa part? or is that mostly ucla/B

and do u think i have ANY chance at ucla lol?

Sorry, PinkPanther36! I don't know anything about UCSD admissions in particular, but what I "know" are rumors that UCLA puts more emphasis on ECs. You have a 30% chance at UCLA, I think. You'll likely get into at least one of the three, though.

I heard from an admissions counselor that UCSD explicitly look at your gpa's (school grades) and SAT scores. So, basically, for UCSD, the computer ranks you according to your scores and they choose the students within the rank.
The ECs would be more effective towards UCB and UCLA even though they are really hard to get in for students out of state. For UCB, only 13% of the admitted students were outside the state. I believe this stats also applies to UCLA since their expectations are similar in magnitude.

UCLA = match/reach
UCB = more match/reach
UCSD = match

UCSD's admissions process is done explicitly with points assigned to academics and extracurriculars. You can find the chart here: <a href="http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html%5B/url%5D">http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html</a></p>

Step I - Academic Review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500
Scores of All Required Exams 3,200
Number of "A-G" Courses Beyond the Minimum 500

Step II - Additional Academic Factors
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational Environment 300

Step III - Socioeconomic Factors
Low Family Income 300
First Generation College Attendance 300

Step IV – Personal Characteristics and Achievement Factors
Demonstrated Leadership 300
Special Talents/Achievements/Awards 300
Community and Volunteer Service 300
Participation in Pre-Collegiate/Motivational and Enrichment Programs 300
Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges 500

This article really summarizes the whole process for admission to UCSD:
<a href="http://alumni.ucsd.edu/magazine/vol1no2/features/admissions.htm%5B/url%5D">http://alumni.ucsd.edu/magazine/vol1no2/features/admissions.htm</a></p>

According to the article, the cut-off score for last year was 7,456 out of 11,100 points. Not sure if this is only for instaters, though.

Another stat for UCSD that might hurt...
California Residents (% of admits): 93.7%

Yikes, hope you're one of the 6.3% of out of staters admitted!

right, but what percentage of UCSD's total applicant pool are out-of-staters?

hey Pink Panther, i am an out-of-stater who applied to UCSD, UC Davis, & UCSB.

thanks, these are really helpful stuff! i'll just cross my fingers for now...and does anyone know when UC sends out their acceptance/rejections? or does each school send them out at random times

each school does send scores at random times in march but at the same time there are certain dates that you can check online to see if you were accepted for each school

Davis only takes 4% of out of staters--Good Luck! I wanted to apply there but changed my mind after calling and talking to an ad. counc. She said the chances are so slim for anyone from out of state because they are required to take in-staters first.

for UC's do results come out online or paper first?

do you already have their login code?

did we get that in the mail? (sorry im a bit unroganized right now)

mck, i wish i knew that before i wasted the money to apply to Davis! :(

I don't know. I requested a fee waiver and because of taht, I had to send all my apps through MAIL Yesterday, I found that they denied my request. (all my other schools including two private ones have accepted them thus far). So I have to wait for them to send another letter for me to send my money. Anyways, you're in a better situation than I am in.
