California kid at Missouri?

The OOS population is only 15%. S is very interested in the journalism school and is a huge football fan. We are from Southern Cal. Would he be comfortable at Mizzou?

My D. is also from CA ( Northern part) and one of her new friends is from San Diego. Both of them are in J-School. Seems they are enjoying being there.I can tell you more details in a few days - she is coming home on this Saturday for first time since August.

Great, looking forward to hearing about it!

Today our daughter came home. It was her first flight alone; and we had the reasons to be worried because she had to take the airport shuttle at 5am and had about 40 minutes at Kansas City airport before the flight. She was very excited to come home, to see palm trees and “hot” (in her new Midwest opinion) weather, but it was interesting to listen to her comments on our way home:

  • the tree colors are so boring here; you have to see how they are beautiful in Missouri in November
  • the black Californian squirrels are so scary; and ours are so nice as well as rabbits
  • none of my friends from UC have a week break for Thanksgiving and a month winter break; it’s great to be in Mizzou
She really enjoys being there and feels very comfortable now. She doesn’t think anymore that the place is “too far” from CA and even feel sorry for her friends who stayed in CA, because it’s the sane environment, weather, people. She realized how great to be from CA and even how cool to speak another language, which was just a regular thing here among her friends.
I’d say she became more mature, organized (her bags were unpacked during 30 minutes, and a few months ago it would take a couple of days with my regular reminders) and self-confident living on her own.
She made a lot of new friends, spent a few weekends at their homes, was surprised to see how their schools were different from Californian schools, how much corn is everywhere, couldn’t believe that almost nobody knew “Silicon Valley” and asked her,” Is it a plastic surgery center?’
That’s my first impression. We were lucky to see her at least a half of the day, now it’s her friends’ turn….

Thanks Tori’s Mom - I’m so nervous for DD to go so far away next year. She seems so ready and excited, and I’m excited for her but nervous at the same time. Reading that really helped :)

For what it’s worth, I’m friends with probably 7 or 8 people from California, and they all love it here!

Hey Tori, thanks for the info. S got into Arizona State and is really happy about that, but I still want him to keep looking at other schools - sounds like being from California won’t be an issue.

We also considered Arizona State for a while; but after reading some posts that the J-school moved to Downtown Phoenix in August 2008, and the dorms for J-students are also located near the school, which is out of campus we decided to visit Mizzou; and D. just loved it and applied only there.
And for sure being from CA is not an issue. It’s rather an advantage :-)

Good call about the J-school - my son is going to ASU for education, couldn’t get into the Cronkite school with his gpa. He is still keeping Mizzou on his list for the journalism school, but as more of his friends get accepted to ASU he is more excited to go there. One of his friends is in the Cronkite school, and plans on spending a lot of his time in my son’s dorm room…so there you go!

My freshman year roommate and now best friend is from Orange County, and for the most part loves Mizzou.

Keep in mind the OOS number is higher in the JSchool. It is supposed to be more like 50% OOS in JSchool…My D(from TX)had very few friends who were actually from Missouri!
