I am from Seattle but if I go to Berkeley can I become a California resident and get in-state tuition after a year or two??

two years if you declare financial independence, meaning you got a job somewhere and you've been filing taxes as a california resident for two years. the minimum $$ you have to be earning to do this is 7k/year, combined income (you can have more than one job)

oh. i've got a question (2 actually) about this too:

(1) my dad's been paying CA taxes for the past 6 years (he worked there) and just stopped doing so this year (he's moving back for a year). does that count towards in-state recognition?

(2) he's planning on going back after my freshman year, so do would i qualify for in-state status my sophomore year?

thanks :)

when i went to the FA office to ask about this (i lived away from my parents for six years and lived in california but i was classified as out of state so i had a lot of problems regarding residency) and they told me that you have to be filing taxes in CA for at least the last 2 years
i don't know how that 1 year gap will work out, probably best to call the FA office
in terms of admissions, if you're from a CA high school then you're considered an in-state applicant. residency in terms of tuition is a little
