[California Resident] Should I leave my current private 4 year university for a cheaper CSU or UC?

I really enjoy the university I’m currently attending, I enjoy my job here, I enjoy everything. However, it is $60k a year for tuition and I am paying tuition via loans, which are in my single parent’s name. My parent makes a significant amount of money to pay back my loans for me in the future without any struggle, and insists I stay here. Yet, I cannot fathom my mother paying back all that money for me in the future, it feels wrong.

I am a computer science major and I am currently in my second year here at my university. My overall gpa is a 3.5 and my major gpa is a 3.3.

Here is what I have been thinking of:

  1. Finish this semester, Apply to CSU or UC for fall 2017, contact my local CC to see if my credits will transfer, then finish the last 15 credits I need to meet the requirement of at least 60 credits by the end of the spring semester at CC.
  2. Finish my second year at my current university, and apply to CSU or UC. Hope that I get in even though I will have much less priority than CC applicants and other applicants transferring from one UC to another.
  3. Withdrawal from the University now, get my money refunded and finish my second year at CC (starting CC during spring semester 2017), if my credits are accepted by the CC, then apply to CSU or UC for fall 2018.
  4. Stay at my current university
  5. Other options suggested

Thanks.

If she can “pay back my loans for me in the future without any struggle”, why does she need to take loans in the first place? Did she tell you how long it would take her to pay back the loans?

Usually, when parental loans are involved, the college is too expensive. You may want to have a more in-depth conversation with her to get a better idea of how long it will take for her to pay back the loans.

If you are happy then stay. You may hate your new school.
