CALIFORNIA(San Diego) or University of MINNESOTA

hello
i am an international student and i have been accepted by mechanical departments of both University of MINNESOTA and University of CALIFORNIA(San Diego) for a Phd position, all the conditions these universities offered to me is nearly the same, funds are the same, the field i'm going to work is the same, and i am really confused which to choose, please if anybody knows which one should i choose and why help me,i just have a couple of days to make my choice.
thanks in advance

San Diego is a nice city, though I heard the school has no social life and high commuting. I would say University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.

when you say Mechanical, do you mean Engineering? If so, UCSD has a top-notch engineering program.

It kind of depends what you want, but I would place my vote on UCSD.

For one thing, like someone already posted, UCSD is superior to UM in engineering. Also, from the sounds of it, you are going for grad school, so you should want to go to the better school not just better social life.

As far as the social goes, ya I agree UCSD isn’t that great. This is going to sound racist or stereotypical, but there are a lot of Asians (Many internationals like you) who are MUCH more interested in their studies than their neighbors. It doesn’t help that UCSD is in La Jolla as well which is kind of an old peoples rich community. You could always go downtown and hang out, but the Twin Cities are better in my opinion.

A couple other things differ as well, for example, it gets much colder at UM while UCSD is consistently like 60-80. Also UM has has major sports while UCSD has none to speak of if you’re interested in that kind of stuff.

But as I mentioned earlier, if this is for Grad school go with the better program which is UCSD. Plus Cali has much better engineering opportunities than the Upper Midwest does.

Good luck!

I would vote for UC-San Diego but Minnesota is excellent too

Wrong. Minnesota is superior to UCSD in mechanical engineering, although the difference isn’t extremely large.

Minneapolis is a great city, but San Diego is obviously awesome as well. Do you prefer warm or cold weather? ;)

thanks, yes,i mean mechanical engineering, and my field would be CFD and Heat Transfer, the point is climate is not an important option for me right now cause i’m going for my Phd and this is my last shot in the process of my education,so i like to go to the place that has better educational and research programs.any more opinions are greatly appreciated.

I think U Minnesota would be better for you. I on the other hand would pick UCSD, I rather live in California and have better weather. I also act and we all know LA isn’t that far away from San Diego. Good Luck and go with your heart!

is what Cryto says right?
“Plus Cali has much better engineering opportunities than the Upper Midwest does.”

it seems most users say UCSD has better educational programs,if what Cryto says is right too i would have my thumbs up on UCSD.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is a much more cosmopolitan area than people give it credit for, don’t automatically assume you’ll have better opportunities in California.

If climate truly isn’t a concern then I’d vote for Minnesota, the city, area and people are much more manageable and friendly.

Of course, after having lived there for 7 years I can personally attest to the massive Heat Transfers that take place every winter between your body and the outside air.

Good Luck.
