California School prestigiousness??

Well i wanted to know the name recognition and prestigiousness(?) of all UCs and USC... and whatever other school you would like to add in (Caltech too i suppose if you want to...)

Put these in a order you think has the most name recognition and is most prestigious of them all... something like that (like i said, you can add on to this list)

University of California Irvine
University of California Riverside
University of California Los Angeles
University of California Berkeley (<- i'm pretty sure this will be number 1 for everybody)
University of California Davis
University of California Santa Barbara
University of California San Diego
University of California Santa Cruz
University of Southern California

I was just curious.. i don't live in California so i don't know about most of these (except Berkeley, UCLA, and USC.. oh and Caltech, ofcourse!)

You can also put a pros and con next to the schools if you want to...

UCB
UCLA
USC (its not in the cali public system)
UCSD
UCSB = UCD = UCI
UCSC
UCR

Stanford
Caltech
UCB
UCLA
USC
UCSD
UCI
UCSB
UCD
UCSC
UCR

Where does UC Merced stand?

Outside of CA, I think only Cal, LA, USC and Caltech are generally known. At the NE schools I know, those and the Claremonts are the only schools people apply to.

Out of state, (at least in my area) the most commonly known california schools are

Private: Stanford, Caltech, USC
Public: UC Berkeley, UCLA

Every once in a while other names pop up, but the above are the most common. I can't give a really objective ranking of prestigiousness in the UCs, though.

Private Schools:
Stanford, Caltech, Pomona
Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, Scripps (women only)
USC

Public:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UCI, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside

and UC Merced can't really be ranked yet...

Wow i can't believe i left out stanford... like i said, just add onto the list... ^_^

agreed with his^^

CSU's
Cal Poly SLO
Cal Poly PONOMA
SDSU
Long Beach
Chico

huh? Pomona is on par with Stanford and Caltech?

different in a way because it's a LAC but its admissions are about as tough as Stanford and Caltech

Well it's not as prestigious as Stanford and Caltech...

not as well known probably but it is listed as a top ten liberal arts school according to US News

Pomona is considered equal from an eduational point of view from those "in the know", and if grad school admissions are any indication. But from a purely "prestige" point of view, (man on the street) I'd say it has a long way to go before people put it in the same bucket as Stanford or Cal Tech.
Prestige= highly regarded + well-known. Pomona is highly regarded, but not really well known. That seems to be changing, though.

It's hard for small schools to ever reach the prestige level of larger ones. They just don't have the bodies to spread the word!

Yeah, Pomona really speaks for itself when you look at it's statistics--they're amazing. I always thought it was kind of sad that there were a lot of schools like that that aren't nearly as well-known.

Don't think of it as sad... think of it as a great opportunity... especially for those who want excellence but aren't that concerned with "name."

They can get their prestigious name in grad school. :) If they care.

Lol by the time Pomona admits graduate, the school will be prestigious. Its like investing in a stock. Sure it isn't prestigious now, but in 10 years who knows?

Standford
Caltech
UC Berk
UCLA
UCSD
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
UCSB
UCD
UCI
UCSC
UCR
UCM

Cal Poly? That's odd...

"Stanford", not "Standford".

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

University of California Irvine 5
University of California Riverside 8
University of California Los Angeles 1
University of California Berkeley 2
University of California Davis 7
University of California Santa Barbara 6
University of California San Diego 4
University of California Santa Cruz 9
