California schools I should look at? Bus./Fin./Econ. (3.85-33 ACT)

I'm a junior in California wondering what schools to look at in California/West Coast. I'm aware my GPA is a little lower than one would expect with a 33, so that is my main concern. I only took one AP class junior year, and plan on taking AP Pre Calc, AP Psych, and AP Econ senior year. I'd plan to major in business/finance/econ, in order of preference. 3.8 is as low as my GPA will be, more likely around 3.95. I have a 33 on the ACT first try, and thats as high as its gonna get. I'll be a four year varsity golfer, and likely do an internship starting this summer.

I feel that Cal Poly SLO is where I'll likely end up. USC, UCSB, Washington also on the radar.

Any feedback or input is greatly appreciated.

Too little information to say anything. However, you could probably do better than Cal Poly SLO.

Your list is good so far, what do you want in school in terms of size, location, and atmosphere?

I’ll add all I can:
White male. All A’s on my transcript until junior year, received B’s in AP Environmental and Math Analysis both semesters, A’s everywhere else. Don’t take a rigorous course load, 1 AP junior year, 3 planned senior year. Finished third year of Spanish freshman year. Took classes in marketing and accounting last year. 300+ volunteer hours thru the end of junior year. Tutor elementary kids in math once a week for the last 10 months. ACT composite 33- 34E, 35M, 30R, 32S, 9 on essay. 4 year varsity golfer for state champion team, captain junior and senior year (pending). Very good with crunching numbers and algebra, and I’m assuming (for now) finance/business is the way to go.

Parents both 4 year graduates. Prefer the little town feel like SLO, born and raised in mild climate of San Diego, but also feel like I could get into a more prestigious school, and I’m not intimidated by a culture shock. The job network available out of college makes up a considerable chunk of the decision for me.

Hope this helps, let me know if I can provide anything else to make advice easier.

How about Santa Clara, USC, UCLA.UCSB,UCI, UCSD? What is your UC GPA?

UC GPA: 3.88
@DrGoogle

For actual AACSB-accredited undergraduate business majors, the California publics include UCB, UCR, and most CSUs. Among private schools, there are Chapman, LMU, Menlo, Santa Clara, USD, USF, USC, UOP, and Woodbury. A slightly smaller set has AACSB-accredited undergraduate accounting majors.

@International95 I appreciate the kind words!
@ucbalumnus thank you for the link, very helpful and relevant

Does anyone think I could make a run at USC Marshall? If I tack on a business/finance related internship in downtown San Diego this summer? Hard to ignore the network you inherit as SC Alum…

I think the thing that will hurt you in admissions a bit is your seeming lack of rigor. I would suggest rethinking the Sr year schedule if you expect to be viable at the more reachy colleges. precalc isn’t an AP class (?)

@BrownParent thank you for your advice, and I agree that will be my main weakness when applying for any colleges. I should clear up that my scheduled math class is Pre Calc Honors (not an AP but weighted on the 5 point scale) so thank you for pointing that out. I’m now considering taking that this summer and possibly moving into Calc AB in the fall.

I was more thinking that your APs were in a bit more softball classes than the core classes. Here is one thread with a guide for assessing chances at USC.

Claremont McKenna (CMC)

Claremont McKenna is great for econ/bus/fin, but it is a reach for everyone. OP should definitely go for it, because they look more for personality than anything else. Do you have any great leadership positions?

I would recommend you look into the smaller privates such as Pepperdine, Santa Clara University, Chapman, etc over the big publics such as SLO or UCSB.
