California Schools?

Male- New Jersey
Good public highschool (ranked like 600 or something in newsweek, 150 kids per grade, this year about 10 to top 10 schools).

About me:

SATs 21xx maybe 22xx after the fall (ill take the act in the fall also, maybe ill do well on that)
US history 760
Math II 750

GPA: 3.77 uw... UC gpa 4.07 (top 10%)
Most rigorous schedule, will have taken 10 ap classes. Only 4 before my senior year though, so UC gpa doesnt benefit from my other (honors courses because im OOS).

major- political science? Not sure but NOT engineering though...

About me (i have some other stuff too, but ill do whats most important to me)

4 years basketball
4 years tennis

Helped create a business with my dad that is the source of my family income (i made the website, create all the advertisements and worked full time for a few months, now I work part time). I will certainly do an essay about this as i think it separates me...

Created my own computer repair service, 8+ hours a week (40$ an hour so it's good money).

I've got some other clubs and stuff, but that's the most important stuff.

Chance me at

stanford-obviously a reach but is it possible?
Pomona-obviously a reach but is it possible?
USC-match range?
UC Berkeley- i know this is a reach due to oos, but is it do-able/realistic?
UCLA- same as berkeley
UCSD- match range?
UCSB (This would probably be a safety right? Im just so far over the avg stats) I'd definitely be happy here
Pepperdine

Any other suggestions? Ill probably apply to all the UC's...

Stanford, Berkeley, Pomona, and UCLA are all high reaches.
UCSD and the rest of the UC's you mentioned besides UCB and UCLA still will be reaches, not matches, because you're OOS. If you were in-state, you'd definitely get into UCSB.
Dunno much about Pepperdine, sorry.

ivycmm, by high reach, does that mean impossible? Also, I know ucsd uses a rigid point system, and im pretty sure that i am right around/above last years cutoff.....

As far as USC goes, I probably have a good shot there right? Im not disadvantaged for being OOS like the UCs (since its private) and im somewhere in the 75% range for test scores.

The UCs are largely numbers based, can i really get denied at UCSB? I know they favor in state, but the average admit sat scores are below 2000... shouldn't i have that covered?

I think that if you were in state you'd be a High Match for UCB and UCLA - the poster ivycmm is a bit harsh on the entrance. However, because you are OOS, the admissions into the UCs will be hard. I'd say reach for Cal and LA. High reach for Stanford b/c that school is extremely impossible to get into. Pepperdine is a solid match for you. USC is a high match.

Pepperdine's selectivity is not based on SAT scores.

stockguru- so we're thinking along the same lines then ...for the top UCs... its possible, but not likely.

shrinkwrap: what is pepperdine's admissions based on?

Does anyone know anything about USC's admissions?

Thanks for the feedback!

"shrinkwrap: what is pepperdine's admissions based on?"

Pepperdines mid 50 SAT scores Combined: (1130 – 1350 but they do use writing, at least '07:08 apps) belies its percent of students admitted/ students applied (Overall acceptance rate:28%) . I can't be sure (although my D did get admitted there) but if you look at the essay prompts (no common app ) or go to the admitted student events, it seems they are especially looking for kids who appreciate their values, and who will be happy there.
