California State University - Which One?

Hello! I was wondering which CSU would be best for the program I want to be taking in the future (Speech Language Pathology / Communication Sciences and Disorders). I’ve tried looking into UC’s but I don’t believe they offer the major, but I know that many CSUs do offer this program as a Bachelors. I was wondering what your thoughts were, and which colleges I should focus my sights on regarding this program. Thank you so much!

The highest ranked CSU for Speech Language Pathology is San Diego State at #24 followed by San Francisco State at #71 (USNWR) then tied for #141 are Fresno State, Cal State Long Beach, Northridge and Sacramento State.

I would apply to all and see which campus you prefer based on academics, social life and personal fit.

I am a grad of the Masters Program at SDSU in Speech, Language and Hearing pathology and audiology sciences.
It was a phenomenal program then (30 yrs ago), and from what I’ve heard, it is still phenomenal and tough now and is impacted. They have downsized how many majors they will accept.

I had a large number of classmates who graduated with Linguistics and English majors at their respective UC’s and then transferred to SDSU for the Masters program. They often commented how tough the coursework and program really was, and how qualified the accepted students were. At the time, we had shared access to UCSD’s School of Medicine’s Library for disease/pathological studies. I think the students still use their library access. (FYI: Colin Firth’s sister, Kate Firth attended SDSU as I was leaving to graduate. She consulted with him on the movie, The King’s Speech).

You’ve mentioned, in a previous post, that your parents don’t respect the CSU’s and view them as a little better than CC’s.

This is your option to go wherever the wind blows.
Unfortunately, their views don’t correspond nor align with the views of current parents who are thrilled that their children were accepted into SDSU. My nephew was accepted with top honors (and he was accepted to Northwestern and UCSD). My good friend’s daughter, with top SAT scores and above a 4.0 was accepted (also accepted at USC) and attends SDSU.

If you can get in, you need to know that the program is tough but there are other Calstates that offer the major. I also was and still am impressed with Northridge’s program. A number of their undergrads were in our Masters program.

what are your stats, other interests and budget?

States:

4.35 GPA
1280 SAT (680 Math, 600 Reading + Writing) I plan on retaking this in August and October
Eligibility Index - 4760

Budget:

Not necessarily a problem, since I’m primarily focused on getting into CSUs and since I’m an in-state applicant the tuition will be reduced

Interests/EC’s:

I’m secretary of my school’s Art Club
I’m class representative of my school’s Key Club
I’m involved in a freshman mentorship program, where 4 other upperclassmen and I are designated a specific freshman homeroom 3 days in the school week for 20 minutes. Here, we provide academic, informational, emotional, and moral support to the freshman as well as answering any questions they may have about anything (essentially we’re trying to make their transition from middle school to high school as easy as possible)
I’ve been in a high school’s orchestra for all four years of my high school career
I co-administer 2 blogs (Astrology + Studying) and self-administer 1 (writing)
I’ve received over 100 hours of community service, but my high school only allows us to show that we’ve received 50 on the high school transcript

Other than Cal Poly SLO, EC’s are not considered for CSU admissions. You are competitive applicant for all the CSU’s.
Definitely consider applying to the Honors colleges at the CSU’s.

Best of luck

agreed - any of the CSUs would probably be happy to have you. CPSLO, SDSU, CSULB and CSU Nortridge are a great start to your ap list.

good luck
